BARNSLEY Football Club have completed the loan signing of Maltese international striker Michael Mifsud on loan from Championship side Coventry City.

Barnsley FC completed the loan signing for the remainder of the season late yesterday evening. Initially, the Reds had hoped to sign Michael on a three year deal but with the transfer window drawing to a close and the level of interest from rival clubs, the Club decided to change its tack to a loan arrangement.

Michael told www.barnsleyfc.co.uk: "Barnsley showed non- stop commitment to getting me to join them, including getting Heinz Muller to ring me night and day. I have also spent two days at the club talking to Simon Davey and Don Rowing and looking at the facilities. I had the chance to join other Championship clubs and had strong La Liga interest, but the important thing is to get the chance to play in a direct attacking role.

"I must say that the signing of Daniel Bogdanovic was influential, a very clever ploy indeed.I look forward to playing with my Malta strike partner and getting the chance to play with Heinz again.I was close to signing a permanent deal, but I just needed more time to think it through and time was in short supply. I can't wait to get playing and help the team move forward."

The 27-year-old started his professional career with Sliema Wanderers in Malta and his prolific form in his homeland attracted interest from German giants Kaiserslautern, whom he joined in 2001. He returned to Sliema two years later and enjoyed a successful spell in Norway with Lillestrøm before catching the eye of Coventry City boss Micky Adams in January 2007. Michael has been a hit at the Sky Blues, netting against the Reds in March 2007 as he stole the show in a 4-1 win at the Ricoh Arena. Michael was again on the scoresheet against the Reds on the opening day of the 2007/2008 campaign and went on to grab 17 goals in all competitions for the Sky Blues.

He was in fine form again at the Ricoh Arena against Barnsley as City ran out 4-0 winners in February, with his overall display of lightening quick front play drawing admiring glances from Reds manager Simon Davey.

A big star in his homeland, Michael has won more than 60 international caps since making his Malta debut in 2000 and has bagged 20 goals.
