A VERY young Barnsley side slipped to a 4-1 defeat at Grimsby Town as the Reds struggled to find a killer touch in front of goal although Michael Coulson marked his return from injury with a goal.

Grimsby snatched the lead on 18 minutes, under the watchful gaze of ex-Reds Academy boss Stuart Watkiss, when Peter Bore cut inside his marker and planted a drive past Kyle Letheren's despairing dive.

The lead lasted just seven minutes until Alistair Taylor whipped a fine cross in from the left which found its way to Michael Coulson and the striker, returning from six months on the sidelines with a knee injury, swept the ball home at the far post.

Town were back in front inside five minutes when Andy Taylor found the back of the net before Peter North extended the Mariners' advantage on the stroke of half time.

Barnsley started the second half strongly and Jacob Butterfield, who spent a week training with Grimsby earlier this month, was denied by Gary Montgomery's fine save.

The Mariners grabbed a fourth with virtually the final kick of the game after Taylor was upended in the area. McDermott planted the spot kick past Letheren.
