LATE FIGHTBACK NOT ENOUGH FOR REDS

Posted on: Thu 16 Oct 2008

BARNSLEY 2 (Adam 2)
HUDDERSFIELD TOWN 3 (Broadbent, Hunt, Atkinson).

A YOUTHFUL Reds side staged a brave second half fightback but could not overhaul a three goal deficit against Huddersfield Town at Oakwell last night.

Barnsley started the game strongly and Tyrone Crapper almost put the home side in front on ten minutes when fired over from 12 yards after great play by Jamil Adam and Luke Potter.

Adam was then a whisker away from breaking the deadlock two minute later when he met Mounir El Haimour's cross but glanced an effort wide of the upright.

Huddersfield grabbed the lead against the run of play on 14 minutes when a misplaced pass gave Daniel Broadbent the chance to race in on goal and the winger made no mistake beating Kyle Letheren.

Ex-Oakwell youngster Luke Beckett then went an inch away from doubling the advantage on 24 minutes when he met Keigan Parker's cross but his header flew wide.

Barnsley were better at the start of the second half and Reuben Noble-Lazarus forced Alex Smithies into a fine low save on 52 minutes after breaking through the Town defence. Noble-Lazarus was then an inch away from pegging the Terriers back on the hour mark as he left fly from 20 yards and had Smithies rooted to the spot but watched his drive fly wide.

The Reds then imploded with two minutes of madness as first Jack Hunt and then substitute Chris Atkinson put Town three up.

Barnsley were rattled but managed to claw their way back into the game on 71 minutes when Noble-Lazarus produced a moment of quality on the right to cross for Adam to head home.

Adam was in again on 83 minutes as he met Steven Bennett's fine cross to bring an outstanding parry from Smithies although the striker was alert enough to put the rebound into the back of the net.
