MULLER PENALTY SAVE NOT ENOUGH FOR RESERVES
BARNSLEY 1 (Mostto)
LEEDS UNITED 2 (Hotchkiss, Milne)
HEINZ Muller's stunning early penalty save was not enough for an experienced Reds side and they crashed to defeat against Leeds United on a sodden night at Oakwell.
United started strongly and had a great chance to take the lead on 12 minutes when Tom Elliott hit the deck under Luke Potter's rash challenge in the area. Elliott brushed himself down and smacked his penalty low towards the bottom corner but Muller dove full length to turn the ball onto the post and away.
Elliott went close again on 19 minutes when he flashed a free header just wide of the upright after the Reds defence had stood off the big striker from a corner.
It was no surprise when Leeds took the lead three minutes later although Hotchkiss' long range drive took a wicked deflection off Rob Atkinson and wrong-footed Muller.
Barnsley were caught napping again seven minutes before the restart when they forgot to mark Andrew Milne from Ben Parker's clever near post free kick and the big defender powered his header past Muller.
The home side finally threatened Jonathan Lund's goal on 40 minutes after Miguel Mostto had been upended right on the edge of the box. Argentinean Hugo Colace, making his first competitive appearance for the Club following his summer transfer from Newell's Old Boys, curled a fine free kick over the wall but Lund was in the right place to make an outstanding one-handed save.
Barnsley were better in the second half and Colace was a foot or so away from pulling one back on 49 minutes when he hit a shot over. Youngster Alistair Taylor then had Lund scrambling frantically across his goal just after the hour mark following a purposeful run in from the right.
The Reds had the ball in the back of the net on 69 minutes when Potter got his head to Jacob Butterfield's dangerous free kick but the goal was chalked out for offside.
The goal finally came on 71 minutes after good play by Tyrone Crapper gave Mostto a chance and the Peruvian did not need a second invitation to beat Lund from 12 yards.
