HARD FOUGHT POINT FOR RESERVES

Posted on: Thu 28 Aug 2008

BARNSLEY'S reserves battled hard but were held to an entertaining 3-3 draw by Rotherham United at Oakwell last night.

The game, played on reserves new home at the Academy following a significant summer in investment by the Club in new floodlights, also saw the return from injury of goalkeeper Heinz Muller.

Barnsley got off to the best possible start when Reuben Lazarus was upended in the area with just two minutes on the clock. Jamil Adam slotted the penalty comfortably past Steven Cann.

Adam was on target again eight minutes later when he lobbed the ball home from 25 yards after Miguel Mostto had forced the Rotherham defence into an error.

Rotherham pulled one back on the half hour when Marc Birchall challenged Muller in the air as the pair went for Omar Garcia's cross. The ball dropped to Jamie Yates, who was left with a tap in.

Garcia was involved again on 40 minutes when his burst into the area caught the Reds defence out and the Spaniard pulled his cross back to give Yates the chance to rifle the ball home.

Barnsley went back in front six minutes after the restart when Robert Atkinson sent a towering header past Cann from Jacob Butterfield's free kick.

The Millers grabbed their equaliser with 12 minutes remaining when Marcus Harber managed to get to the byline and drilled over a fine cross that gave Marc Newsham the simplest of goals at the back post.
