TYKES STOPPER GETS ON HIS BIKE
DARREN Moore is getting on his bike to raise money for charity and help under-privileged children have a better life.
The Barnsley defender has teamed up with close friend and former Pompey team mate Linvoy Primus to organise a charity bicycle ride from Charlton to Portsmouth, via Barnet and Reading - all clubs where Primus played.
Moore is hoping to raise more than £100,000 for the Faith and Football charity, which he co-founded.
The 160-mile round trip takes place at the end of this month and is expected to take three days to complete.
Other footballers including Robert Green, Lee Holmes and Zoltan Gera are all on the ride.
Money raised from the event will provide football equipment, facilities and mini-tournaments for youngsters from deprived suburbs of both Birmingham and Portsmouth.
Moore, who cycled a 50-mile stretch of the Great Wall of China in 2006 to raise £60,000 for the same charity, said: "The charity reaches out to the inner-city kids who find life difficult for whatever reason.
"A lot of the leaders of the charity are from churches and I'm in the process of getting several other footballers involved as well.
"We hold football tournaments, provide facilities, drink, food and trophies as well as equipment. We invite parents along as well and it's good because people make new friends.
"We also try and take these kids off for the day as well if we can, to the seaside or Alton Towers, somewhere they normally can't afford to go.
"I feel really fortunate to be in a position to use my role as a professional footballer to help others less fortunate and I'm even more determined to do this now I'm coming towards the end of my career.
"It's great and very fulfilling. If I see a lad who looks like he might have some talent than I also try and refer him to the nearest football club."
