FULL TIME FROM OAKWELL
BARNSLEY 2 (Souza 45, Macken 70 P)
CHENGDU BLADES 0 (Stewart OFF 72, Tie OFF 88)
BARNSLEY would have wanted more of a test from today's pre-season clash with Chengdu Blades but the Reds had a decent work out although they were always going to be too good for their Chinese opponents who lost their discipline late on.
Reds boss Simon Davey turned his attentions to the opening Championship encounter with Queens Park Rangers as he went with probably eight or nine of the side likely to start at Loftus Road next weekend. Luke Steele returned between the sticks behind a back four of Stephen Foster, Dennis Souza, Darren Moore and Marciano Van Homoet. Rob Kozluk was on the bench.
Mounir El Haimour and Martin Devaney filled the wide berths while Jon Macken and Iain Hume looked to grab a little pre-season confidence against the Chinese touring side.
The only question marks were in the middle of the park and, while Jamal Campbell-Ryce and Bobby Hassell started today, the imminent return of Brian Howard, Diego Leon and Hugo Colace meant that competition for the midfield roles in the next seven days will be fierce.
Barnsley could have been in front with less than two minutes on the clock when Campbell-Ryce rose unmarked at the back post to meet Hume's fine cross from the left but Chengdu keeper Fu Bing threw himself across goal to make a smart save.
Bing was in fine form again on seven minutes to tip El Haimour's low drive around the post after the Frenchman had ran at the heart of the Chinese defence.
Two minutes later the keeper was called into action again as Macken managed to get in behind Chengdu and got a shot away but again Bing managed to parry away his shot. The Chengdu number one was forced into another stop on ten minutes when he turned Devaney's rocket over the bar.
Devaney was next to try his luck after combining well with Macken on the edge of the area on 22 minutes but his low drive fizzed past the far post with Bing scrambling.
Barnsley were in front in stoppage time when Devaney's corner caused all sorts of problems in the heart of the Chengdu defence. The ball eventually dropped to Souza, who prodded home from close range.
Chengdu's first attempt anywhere near goal came on 48 minutes when Zhang Chao Song hammered one over the bar after the Reds had cleared Zou You Gen's corner. At the other end Hume fired an effort over the bar from 20 yards on 53 minutes.
Hassell then showed great skill and vision to trick his way to the byline on 56 minutes before fizzing in a low cross but the Chengdu defence managed to clear.
Chengdu should have been back on level terms on 59 minutes after a flowing move through the Reds backline gave Wang Song the chance to deliver from the left flank. The striker's cross beat Steele but Danielson somehow managed to head over from four yards.
The Reds had a great chance to put some daylight between themselves and Chengdu on 69 minutes when Hume tripped over Demar Stewart's outstretched leg in the area and the referee pointed to the spot. Macken stepped up and slotted the penalty past Bing and into the back of the net.
Although a friendly, Stewart was rightly shown a straight red card 72 minutes for a ridiculous lunge from behind on Devaney. The Jamaican international made no attempt to play the ball and just scythed through the Reds winger right on the edge of the area to earn a deserved early shower.
The Reds made a double change on 78 minutes with Kayode Odejayi and Miguel Mostto coming into the action to press their claims for places at QPR in the closing stages. Odejayi almost made an instant impact two minutes later when he got his head to Van Homoet's cross but Bing was quickly down to make a very good stop. Odejayi then almost broke through the Chengdu defence on 88 minutes but had his run to goal halted by Li Tie's needless trip. The Chinese international was shown a second yellow card as Chengdu ended the game with nine men.
