FULL TIME FROM HUISH PARK
YEOVIL TOWN 2 (Tomlin 40, Owusu 82)
BARNSLEY 0
BARNSLEY were given a stern test in the sun at Huish Park and have a lot of work to do on the training field after being out played by League One Yeovil Town.
Reds boss Simon Davey named a strong side to take on League One hopefuls Yeovil at Huish Park with Kayode Odejayi and Jamal Campbell Ryce making their first appearances of pre-season. There was a surprise on the bench with a mystery Czech midfielder named only as John Smith amongst the substitutes.
Yeovil made their intentions know early on with some hefty challenges on Mounir El Haimour by Aidan Downes, which would have both earned the midfielder yellow cards in a league match.
After a pedestrian opening by both sides, Yeovil finally sprang into life on 23 minutes when Danny Schofield raced down the left before pulling the ball back well for Gavin Tomlin but a combination of El Haimour and Dennis Souza managed to scramble the ball clear. Schofield was in again on 26 minutes as Bobby Hassell's wayward header gave the midfielder a clear sight of goal but he blazed well wide with only Kyle Letheren to beat. Schofield again had the chance to shoot on 37 minutes after Stephen Foster had brought down Paul Warne on the edge of the area. Schofield hammered his free kick into the wall.
The closest Barnsley came to half a chance came on 38 minutes when Hugo Colace and Iain Hume combined to knock the ball in behind the Yeovil defence for Odejayi to chase but the pass was well over hit and rolled through to Glovers keeper Corin Brown.
Yeovil were in front on 40 minutes when Aidan Downes managed to pull a loose ball back past Hassell and into the danger area to give Schofield a chance six yards out. The midfielder took his shot early but was denied by Letheren's fine save although the Reds keeper could do nothing about Tomlin's finish on the rebound.
Hume finally managed to get behind his marker on 42 minutes to cross for Odejayi to attack but his strike partner could only nod the ball back across the face of goal from eight yards.
The half time introductions of Brian Howard and Jon Macken did little to inject life into the Reds as they struggled to find any sort of rhythm or control in the game.
Yeovil again forced Letheren into action on 47 minutes when Warne fired in from distance but the young Welshman could only parry his shot to safety. Ex-QPR man Marc Bircham then fired one a foot or so wide of the post on 51 minutes as the game became even more scrappy in the middle of the park.
Bircham showed he had lost none of his fight on 57 minutes when his knee high challenge on Souza earned an angry reaction from the Brazilian, who somehow managed to carry on with the ball.
Barnsley finally crafted a chance on 58 minutes when Campbell-Ryce swung over a deep cross from the right which Stephen Foster attacked but the defender saw Brown parry his header away. Brown then somehow managed to clear his lines under pressure from El Haimour a minute later.
Tomlin gave an early contender for miss of the year on 62 minutes after Warne had skipped his way to the byline and pulled the ball back. Tomlin was unmarked and just five yards out but planted a shot wide of the target with an open goal to aim at.
Howard went close to a leveller on 75 minutes when his curling free kick smacked against the crossbar with the keeper well beaten.
Yeovil made sure of the win on 82 minutes when veteran Lloyd Owusu broke clean through behind El Mounir and planted a low drive past Letheren and in off the far post.
Owusu could have made it embarrassing on 87 minutes as he raced onto Conrad Smith's pass but could not find a finish when faced with Letheren and the chance went begging. Andrew Kirk then almost added to the scoreline on 90 minutes when he turned in the area before lashing the ball high over the bar.
