FULL TIME FROM OAKWELL

BARNSLEY 1 (Christensen 71)
SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY 0

BARNSLEY'S own Great Dane - Kim Christensen - savaged the Owls with a fine second half header to settle a closely fought local derby at Oakwell.

In a stop start local derby, the Reds went close to opening the scoring on five minutes when Kim Christensen found Rohan Ricketts in the area but the winger could only shoot straight at Robert Burch. Paul Reid then sliced a shot over the bar from all of four yards after attacking Jacob Butterfield's corner seconds later.

Andy Johnson then found the right pass to send Christensen in on Burch on 16 minutes but the big striker could only shoot straight at the Owls keeper.

Burch had to be at his very best on 25 minutes as he managed to get down quickly to claw Kayode Odejayi's header out of the bottom corner after the striker had me Reid'd knock back.

Nick Colgan's only real test came on 36 minutes as he managed to grab Etienne Esajas' shot away at the second attempt.

The first real controversial moment was on 43 minutes as Odejayi sent Christensen through on goal only for the striker to be felled from behind by Lee Bullen's clumsy challenge. The referee amazingly gave nothing.

Again Christensen should have had a penalty two minutes later as he won the ball in the air only to be hammered by Mark Beever's flailing arms and hit to the ground. Again the referee waved away the Reds' protests.

Barnsley stored out after the break and Butterfield could have given the home side the lead on 47 minutes as he danced his way into the area before lashing a shot just over the bar.

At the other end Esajas went close after taking advantage of a lucky break in the area but hid shot was well wide of Colgan's goal.

Butterfield again broke free in the Owls box on 57 minutes but saw his path to goal blocked by Burch's outstanding save. From Butterfield's corner Bobby Hassell headed over the bar under pressure.

The winning goal came on 71 minutes and it was a rare moment of quality in a keenly fought local derby. Rhys Meynell swung a fine cross into the area and Christensen managed to plant a diving header past Burch and into the top corner.

Christensen went close again on 77 minutes as he lashed wide of the mark from Andy Johnson's free kick.
