FULL TIME FROM OAKWELL
BARNSLEY 9 (Christensen 1, 43, 48; Coulson 54, 68; Fedorenko 6; Hassell 50, Meynell 56, G. McGrory 88)
GRIMSBY TOWN 1 (North 16)
BARNSLEY striker Kim Christensen led the charge as the Reds destroyed Grimsby Town in the Pontins Holiday's League Cup at Oakwell.
Christensen netted the perfect hat trick - one with his right foot, one with his left and a header - as the home side hit NINE goals past the Mariners.
The big Dane shocked the visitors with just a minute on the clock when he broke down the right hand side before lashing the ball past Lee Overton from 25 yards.
Christensen was in the thick of the action again just five minutes later when he glanced Michael Coulson's cross against the up right before Luke Fedorenko prodded the rebound into the net from close range.
Grimsby rallied and Danny North brought a fine save from Nick Colgan on 15 minutes before cutting the deficit a minute later with a well-struck effort from the edge of the area.
The Reds got their third on 43 minutes when Rhys Meynell drifted through the area before planting over a cross for Christensen to head home.
It got even better for the Dane just three minutes after the restart when he raced onto Coulson's pass before hammering a left footed shot past the stranded Overton from 20 yards.
Christensen was the Mariners tormentor in chief again on 50 minutes as he made a nuisance of himself in the area as the tussled for Jacob Butterfield's corner. The ball eventually fell to Bobby Hassell, who lashed it into the roof of the net.
Hassell the turned provider on 54 minutes as his pinpoint pass sent Coulson free down the middle and the youngster, who had tormented to Town defence all night, grabbed his goal with a crisp low finish.
Coulson showed great awareness to set up the seventh goal on 56 minutes as his quick feet and smart pass put Meynell in on Overton and again the ball ended up in the back of the net.
Coulson grabbed a second of the game 12 minutes later when he pounced onto Fedorenko's pass before wrong-footing Overton with a drive from the edge of the area.
Substitute Greg McGrory wrapped things up on 88 minutes after finding a yard of space in the area before hammering a shot against the bar. The ball bounced down and the linesman raised his flag straight away to show it had crossed the line.
