LIVE FROM GLANFORD PARK

SCUNTHORPE UNITED 2 (Hooper 50, Hayes 90)
BARNSLEY 1 (Bogdanovic 79)

PAUL Hayes' late, late, late goal robbed the Reds of a deserved point at Glanford Park.

Barnsley manager Mark Robins made two changes to his side as he looked to get back to winning ways at Scunthorpe United. After disappointments against the Iron in the league at Oakwell and FA Cup here at Glanford Park back in January in came Adam Hammill and Anderson de Silva while Emil Hallfredsson and Jay Rodriguez were missing following Saturday's defeat by Plymouth.

It was fast, frantic and scrappy but Anderson almost lifted the opening stages inside two minutes with an audacious attempt to lob the ball goalward from 30 yards. His effort looped wide of the mark.

Anderson was obviously pumped up after missing out at the weekend and he battled his way into another shooting position on five minutes but his effort cannoned against Rob Jones. Filipe Teixeira did wonderfully well to bring the rebound under control and beat his marker on the right but his well-struck shot cannoned into the stand.

Although the Reds made the most of a scrappy opening, it was Scunthorpe who went closest to grabbing an early goal on 14 minutes when Martyn Woolford nipped in behind Carl Dickinson and onto Paul Hayes' pass but Keiran Trippier was quickly across to make a smart block.

Hayes then found the right pass through the heart of the Barnsley defence again on 18 minutes as he sent Gary Hooper away in the clear but the striker inexplicably opted for an early shot and could only prod the ball through to Luke Steele.

It was a frustrating opening half for the Reds who were never able to get into their stride against a well drilled and high pressure Scunthorpe side. Anderson could have been booked on 23 minutes for a wild swing at Woolford before Hooper again blazed well, well wide of the target seconds later after finding space between Darren Moore and Dickinson.

A soft foul by Stephen Foster on Hooper gave Scunthorpe United another chance to put the Reds under pressure. Hayes' free kick was dangerous but Steele was in the right place to punch clear. Josh Wright could not get his effort anywhere near the goal on the rebound.

Barnsley's chances were less frequent although Teixeira did well to drift into a shooting position on 32 minutes but his effort was well blocked away by a resolute Scunthorpe defence.

It was a little ray of hope that kick started the Reds. Teixeira burst to the byline on 32 minutes and beat Joe Murphy but Michael Raynes cleared the danger before a Reds forward could turn it into an empty net. Hammill then curled one just over the bar from 20 yards as Barnsley finally put Scunthorpe under pressure.

Teixeira had Scunthorpe scrambling again on 34 minutes as he crashed one in from the edge of the area but David Mirfin did well to block the ball although there was more of a look of handball about his diving stop.

Barnsley were forced into a change on 35 minutes when Trippier limped out of the action. Bobby Hassell replaced him at right back.

The Reds grew into the game after a slow start and another Teixeira corner on 38 minutes put Scunthorpe United under pressure. The ball eventually came out to Nathan Doyle but the midfielder lashed his shot well, well wide.

Hammill had Murphy worried on 42 minutes as he ended a free flowing Barnsley move with a strike at goal from 25 yards but his low effort just drifted wide of the post.

Still the half chances came and went for Barnsley. Hammill left Raynes for dead on 43 minutes before digging a decent cross out from the byline but Hugo Colace could not apply a composed finish at the back stick. Colace then fired over a good free kick seconds later but Dickinson just could not get enough on his header to turn it goalward.

Scunthorpe had the bit between their teeth at the start of the second half and grabbed the opening goal on 50 minutes as Matt Sparrow did well to cross and a combination of Moore and Hooper deflected the ball over the line from close range.

Scunthorpe had their tails up but Sparrow should have seen yellow on 54 minutes for a swing through Hammill. Teixeira then could have done better a minute later as his cross found Murphy when it should have given Andy Gray a tap in.

The Iron went close again on 57 minutes as some quick passing on the edge of the area gave Woolford the chance to shoot but the winger scuffed his effort well, well wide. Scunthorpe should have killed the game seconds later as Hooper somehow managed to get clear in behind Moore and Foster to race in on Steele but the Reds keeper pulled off a magnificent late stop to deny a certain goal.

Steele was at his very, very best again to turn Sam Togwell's goalbound effort around the post just before the hour mark.

Barnsley's big, big chance fell to Teixera on 61 minutes as he rose unmarked six yard out to meet Hassell's cross. It was a free header and the home support sounded resigned to seeing the ball end up in the back of the net but somehow it went wide. It was a bad miss.

Barnsley found a different gear as the pressed for an equaliser. Hammill's cross gave substitute Daniel Bogdanovic a chance on 68 minutes but Murphy was well placed to smother his header.

At the other end Woolford wasted another golden chance to end the Reds hopes on 68 minutes as he missed from the edge of the area. Hooper then should have finished it seconds later as he raced past Moore but again Steele was in magical form to make another fine, fine save.

Former Red Grant McCann was quickly involved and quickly booked on 75 minutes as he scythed through Teixeira.

Barnsley got the goal they deserved on 79 minutes and it came from a real howler by Jones who slipped as he challenged Bogdanovic for Hassell's long ball forward. The Maltese striker skipped away before planting the ball past Murphy and into the back of the net.

The Reds were back on the front foot almost straight from the restart and Hammill's free kick on 81 minutes caused Scunthorpe no end of problems. Teixeira eventually smashed it high over from the edge of the box.

Steele had to be alert on 82 minutes to turn Hayes' cross over the bar and again moments later to snatch Andrew Wright's cross.

At the other end Moore saw a header deflect wide of the mark on 86 minutes from Teixeira's corner although there was a major worry when Hassell was left prone on the turf after the kick had come into the area. Hassell thankfully got back to his feet, albeit it a little gingerly.

Barnsley could have been robbed in stoppage time when Hooper's dive conned the referee right on the edge of the area. Foster, who had pulled out of the challenge by the time Hooper leapt to the ground, was booked but McCann planted his free kick well, well wide of the post although it had clipped the wall.

Despite only showing four minutes of stoppage time the referee just kept on playing and Scunthorpe snatched a late, late winner. It came from the boot of Hayes, who found himself unmarked in the area as the Reds struggled to clear their lines from McCann's 95th minute corner and the ex-Oakwell striker curled in a fine shot past Steele's despairing dive.
