SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY 0
BARNSLEY 1 (Campbell-Ryce 38)
JAMAL Campbell-Ryce may have written his name into Oakwell folklore with the winning goal but Bobby Hassell's late goalline clearance should go down in history for giving the Reds their first win at Hillsborough in 26 years.
Unsurprisingly, Barnsley manager Simon Davey rang the changes in a bid to create some derby day history at Sheffield Wednesday and end a winless run stretching back to Boxing Day. In came Stephen Foster, Hugo Colace, Andranik Teymourian, Michael Mifsud and Daniel Bogdanovic, while Adam Hammill was on the bench. Rob Kozluk, Dennis Souza, Martin Devaney, Kayode Odejayi and Jon Macken paid the price for the second half collapse at Ashton Gate.
Wednesday made one change from the side that crashed at Doncaster Rovers a handful of days ago and it was a big one for the Owls with Barnsley-born defender Mark Beevers missing out through injury. Richard Hinds came back into the heart of the Sheffield Wednesday defence as they looked to avoid a double derby-day defeat against the Reds.
Barnsley were right on the front foot after an early scare when Darren Potter smacked a 25-yard free kick into the Reds wall after Leon Clarke had tumbled under Colace's challenge. The visitors broke quickly with Mifsud picking out Jamal Campbell-Ryce but the Jamaican saw his low shot well blocked away by Richard Hinds. Andranik smashed the rebound high over the bar.
A soft foul on Michael Gray by Bogdanovic gave the Owls a chance to pile on the pressure on seven minutes but Heinz Muller was in the right place to make a simple stop from a keenly worked free kick. There was confusion seconds later as the referees assistant flagged for something as Muller threw the ball out and gave the Owls a second bite of the cherry right on the edge of the Reds area. This time Gray smacked the free kick into Campbell-Ryce and away for a corner.
Marciano Van Homoet had Lee Grant a little worried on ten minutes after breaking infield from the left flank before curling the ball towards the top corner but his cross-shot was never going to trouble the Owls keeper. Darren Moore then went close to a goal a minute later as he fought his way through the Sheffield Wednesday defence to get something on Bobby Hassell's free kick but the ball bounced well wide of the target.
Sheffield Wednesday almost snatched the lead in a barnstorming opening quarter of the game as Marcus Tudgay managed to get a yard of space in the area to take on Clarke's pass but his goal bound shot was wonderfully blocked away by Foster. Van Homoet again found acres of space down the left on 15 minutes and charged in on the Owls defence only to drag his low shot well wide of the mark from 20 yards.
Hassell's long throw caused problems for the Owls on 20 minutes and the bouncing ball gave Colace the chance to hit one from the edge of the area but the Argentine got it all wrong and his shot was nearer the corner flag than Grant's goal.
Hassell was again in the thick of the action deep downfield on 24 minutes as his knock back from Campbell-Ryce's corner gave Foster half a chance on the penalty spot but the Reds skipper put a difficult header high over the bar.
Bogdanovic almost put a goal on a plate for Mifsud on 29 minutes as his pass over the top sent the little Maltese striker away in behi0nd the Owls but he could not find a finish from a tight angle.
The home fans had seen enough of their misfiring side and Clarke's misplaced pass on 32 minutes what greeted by a cacophony of boos inside Hillsborough as the Reds looked to find a goal to match their strangle hold on the game.
Wednesday then gave Anderson was too much time and space to pick a shot on 36 minutes but the Brazilian midfielder wasted a great opportunity on the edge of the box by blazing his effort high into the stand.
The goal finally came on 37 minutes and it was a lightening break downfield by Anderson and Bogdanovic that sent Campbell-Ryce away down the left. The winger did what he does best and cut onto his right foot before slamming an unstoppable shot into the far top corner.
Campbell-Ryce picked up a needless caution on 41 minutes, which will rule him out of the game against QPR at Oakwell on Saturday week.
Wednesday's only real sight of goal came on 43 minutes when Clarke managed to pull his way past Foster and onto Tommy Spurr's throw but the striker blazed his shot woefully wide of the target.
Wednesday started the second half purposefully and Van Homoet was quickly in the book with just four minutes on the clock after the restart after scything through Hinds on the touchline. Jermaine Johnson was then lucky to escape after pushing Moore into Muller after losing out to the Reds defender as the pair raced into the area.
The Hillsborough crowd was suddenly lifted by their side's showing in the opening exchanges of the second half and the noise level rose as Wednesday threw balls forward. Owls boss Brian Laws made his first chance just after the hour mark throwing on Francis Jeffers for Gray.
Barnsley's goal led a charmed life on 66 minutes when Muller completely missed Darren Potter's corner but Van Homoet was alert enough to head clear from under the cross bar. Johnson then looked to emulate Campbell-Ryce on 68 minutes when he broke half the length of the field with the ball but Muller was in the right place to make a smart save.
The Reds broke quickly but Anderson just could not find the right pass at the other end that would have sent Mifsud clean through on goal. It was the Reds turn to freshen things up on 68 minutes as Bogdanovic made way for Macken.
Tudgay had half a chance on 74 minutes and he shot straight at Muller as the game finally threatened to boil over as Anderson and Mifsud both got involved in the unsavoury side of the game as the Reds dug in and showed some true Barnsley grit and determination.
Wade Small blazed over for the Owls on 77 minutes after dumping Andranik on his backside on the edge of the area before Hammill made his Barnsley debut three minutes later. Hammill replaced Andranik in the Reds midfield.
Barnsley had a great chance to kill the game on 85 minutes as Anderson broke his shackles in midfield to race at the Owls defence. The Brazilian managed to put Mifsud in the clear but Grant was quickly off his line to firmly close the door on the Maltese striker.
A clash between Moore and Tudgay earned the Barnsley defence a booking on 86 minutes and gave the Owls another chance to put the ball in a dangerous area but again the Reds stood firm to clear their lines.
Sheffield Wednesday's big chance came on 87 minutes. Scratch that. Sheffield Wednesday's massive chance came on 87 minutes as Jeffers' flick put Tudgay clean through on goal. The striker did everything right and lifted the ball past Muller but Hassell appeared from nowhere to make and outstanding and unbelievable clearance off the line.
It almost got even better for the Reds in stoppage time as Mifsud gave Macken the chance to let fly from 18 yards but Grant managed to get down quickly and made a good low save. Mifsud thought he had his chance a minute later as he broke onto Hammill's pass but was denied a clean strike at goal by the linesman's flag.
