BARNSLEY 1 (Odejayi 67)
CHELSEA 0

KAYODE Odejayi became a Barnsley legend with a stunning second half header to send the Reds to Wembley with a magnificent, history making victory over Chelsea.

Barnsley boss Simon Davey made three changes to his side for the biggest game at Oakwell in a decade as Rob Kozluk, Martin Devaney and Istvan Ferenczi returned to the team. Lewin Nyatanga, Sam Togwell and Jon Macken missed out. There was a shock call up to the bench for youngster Jacob Butterfield, who's only other taste of first team action came at Newcastle in the Carling Cup.

Chelsea were without Petr Cech, Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba but still had a team packed full of international players and multi-million pound buys.

Barnsley were in behind Chelsea with just three minutes on the clock as Jamal Campbell-Ryce's reverse pass put Brian Howard free in the area but the midfielder saw his shot deflect away as the noise level threatened to lift the roof off Oakwell.

Barnsley were in amongst Chelsea from the first whistle and the roar inside Oakwell grew and grew as first Bobby Hassell and then Rob Kozluk put in crunching tackles on the Blues millionaires.

The nearest the visitors got to Luke Steele's goal came on six minutes when Florent Malouda found a yard against Marciano Van Homoet but hammered his shot high into the Pontefract Road End.

Shaun Wright-Phillips managed to sprint in behind Kozluk on eight minutes and his cross looked to be heading for Nicolas Anekla but Dennis Souza was in the right place to make an outstanding block. Joe Cole then flashed a shot over the bar from Juliano Belletti's corner.

At the other end Howard almost hit the corner flag with a swinger from distance after more strong play by Kayode Odejayi against Ricardo Carvalho. Odejayi brushed off Carvalho again on ten minutes to race into the area but ran the ball a little wide and the chance went begging.

Barnsley almost got in again on 13 minutes when Ferenczi's flick put in Odejayi at the back post but Belletti managed to stick out a leg and divert the ball out for a corner kick.

Odejayi skinned Carvalho again a minute later and looked to be racing in on goal only for the Portuguese international to cynically take him out with his outstretched leg. The referee gave the free kick but somehow kept his cards in his pocket.

Chelsea broke quickly on 15 minutes with Anelka finding Cole in acres of space and the England winger managed to pull the trigger but his effort struck Souza and flew wide. From the corner Cole again let fly but this time his shot crashed into the advertising boards.

Odejayi again had the Chelsea defence chasing shadows as he evaded Carvalho a minute later but saw his run ended by Michael Essien's crude challenge. Again Steve Bennett kept his yellow card in his pocket.

Chelsea had a clear sight of goal on 18 minutes as Cole found a yard after Michael Ballack's shot had been deflected into the area. Cole took a touch but Stephen Foster was in the right place to make an outstanding block.

Ballack thought he had found the right pass a minute later as he threaded the ball through to Anelka but the Frenchman wasted a golden chance but shooting weakly at Steele.

Odejayi almost had the goal his first half display deserved on 23 minutes as he charged down Carlo Cudicini's kick but somehow the ball bounced a foot wide of the post. Odejayi was the scourge of the Chelsea backline again seconds later as he held off John Terry before finding Howard but the midfielder could only hit Cudicini with his shot from the edge of the box.

Wayne Bridge managed to get in behind Van Homoet on 29 minutes and fired a fine cross right past Steele and onto the six yard line but Kozluk managed to get there before Cole and headed the ball over his own bar.

Ferenczi thought he had broken the deadlock on 38 minutes as he spun onto Foster's header in the area and lashed the ball past Cudicini only to see his effort fly a foot wide of the upright with the Italian well beaten.

Chelsea were carved open again a minute later as Howard's pass sent Odejayi in on goal and the striker beat Carvalho with ease before bringing an outstanding save from Cudicini.

The Premier League side came out flying after the break and Cole brought a fine save from Steele on 48 minutes as he whipped the ball in from the right. The Reds keeper did wonderfully well to claw the ball away from Anelka.

Anelka turned provider a minute later as he got to the byline to pull the ball back for Cole but Souza was there to make a goal-saving challenge on the England man. Cole again beat Kozluk on 50 minutes but drove his shot straight into Anelka with the goal gaping.

Anelka finally had a run at Souza on 56 minutes as he cut in menacingly from the right flank but his shot was straight at Steele and comfortable for the Reds keeper.

Barnsley defended magnificently as Kozluk, Souza, Foster and Ven Homoet dealt with everything their multi-million pound opponents could throw at them. Hassell showed the Reds never say die determination on 57 minutes as he threw everything into a desperate challenge to deny Cole from close range after the England winger had pounced onto Terry's knockdown.

Cole managed to get in behind Kozluk again on the hour mark as he skipped through before drilling the ball under Steele and across the face of goal but Foster was there to make sure Anelka could not pounce.

Oakwell erupted on 67 minutes as Martin Devaney's pinpoint cross caught Cudicini in no-mans-land and Odejayi threw himself into a header that will live forever in Barnsley FC history.

Chelsea threw everything at the Reds, including Peruvian Claudio Pizarro, but the Reds were magnificent in defence. Wright-Phillips did get a sight of goal on 77 minutes but blazed over the bar from 18 yards.

For all Chelsea's passing and probing it was the Reds who went closest to a second on 80 minutes as Campbell-Ryce lashed the ball just wide of the post with Cudicini scrambling across his goal.

Odejayi was substituted a minute later to a rapturous reception from the Oakwell faithful. The big frontman had been pilloried all season by the fans but was suddenly a Reds legend with one header. How football can change.

Foster was immense in defence again on 86 minutes as he somehow flung his body in to block Pizarro's goalbound shot. Chelsea again threw everything at the Reds and Terry blazed over on 89 minutes after finding himself in acres on the penalty spot.

Howard thought he had opened the Chelsea defence in stoppage time but saw his route to goal ended by Carvalho's clumsy challenge. The Portuguese defender was lucky to escape with only a yellow card.
