BRADFORD CITY 3 (Cooke 33, Bower 66, Weatherall 72)

BARNSLEY 5 (Hayes 52, 78; Reid 60; Devaney 97, 110)

MARTIN Devaney once again staked a claim for legendary status around Oakwell as his two goals finally killed off BradfordCity in extra time after an absolute classic of an FA Cup tie in West Yorkshire.

Reds boss Andy Ritchie named the same side that thumped Scunthorpe United at Oakwell last weekend as he looked for a place in the Third Round of the FA Cup at the second attempt against City. Matt Carbon returned from compassionate leave to take his place on the bench at the expense of young striker Nathan Jarman.

City made two changes from the first game at Oakwell ten days ago with keeper Donovan Ricketts missing through suspension and flying winger Owen Morrison dropping to the bench. Russell Howarth and Andy Cooke came back into the Bantams starting eleven but there was no place for ex-Red Lee Crooks who had to be content with a seat amongst the substitutes.

It was the home side who went closest to scoring with just two minutes on the clock as Cooke took advantage of a weak clearance by Antony Kay and acrobatically turned the ball goalward but his effort flew inches wide of the post.

Another quick break forward by the home side on nine minutes saw Danny Cadamarteri brush aside Jacob Burns before his cross fell nicely to Steven Schumacher but the midfielder fired well wide from 25 yards.

Barnsley pressed forward with Paul Hayes and Chris Shuker finding Brian Howard in space a minute later but the onrushing Bantams defence managed to block his well-struck shot away.

The Reds had the ball in the back of the net on 14 minutes as Marc Richards rose highest to nod Howard's cross into the path of Shuker in the area and the winger made no mistake from six yards only to have play brought back for an offside flag.

It looked as though City were going to grab the lead completely against the run of play on 18 minutes as Cadamarteri broke through as the home side cleared a Reds corner. The former Everton star was clean through but was denied by Devaney's fine saving challenge.

Again the Red tide flowed forward with Howard crashing a shot against David Weatherall before Shuker saw a great drilled cross only just cleared on 21 minutes as the visitors pressed on.

More fine play by Hayes sent Shuker away on 26 minutes and his cross was inch perfect for Richards in the centre but Mark Bower managed to get his head onto the ball first and clear.

Shuker again got in behind City on the half hour as he raced onto Richards pass and took the shot on too early but still brought the very best from Howarth. A minute later Howarth had to be alert again to grab Shuker's cross before Richards had a simple tap in.

Still the Reds pushed City back and a great cross by Bobby Hassell found Richards in the area on 31 minutes but this time the striker could only loop a header high over the top.

Even though it was all Barnsley, the home side were still a threat on the counter attack and Cooke forced Scott Flinders into a save on 32 minutes after a lucky ricochet in the area. A minute later Ben Muirhead saw a shot deflect wide.

It was a travesty when City took the lead completely against the balance of play, possession and chances on 33 minutes as Muirhead's right wing corner deflected off Dean Windass and through to Cooke in the six yard box. Cooke simply could not miss and hammered the ball into the roof of the net.

Although the goal lifted the City faithful it did nothing for the team on the pitch as still the Reds showed great resolve, determination and enterprise to push the home side further back. This time it was Devaney who crossed well on 36 minutes and although Richards had the better of his marker he could not direct his effort into the goal.

Windass riled the Barnsley supporters, bench and players with two disgraceful challenges inside a minute as he looked to stamp his authority on the game in the same way a bull would look to have fun in a china shop. First the veteran went straight through Antony Kay in the area and then his reckless, high and over the top challenge on Neil Austin on 38 minutes almost sparked a melee and could have seriously injured the Barnsley defender.

Burns dealt Windass some of his own medicine a minute later with a strong aerial challenge that left the Bradford star in a crumpled heap on the turf and the home side with a throw in.

The game finally settled down on 45 minutes as yet again it was the visitors in the ascendancy as first Burns brought a fine save from Howarth with a dipping volley and then Kay headed over from the resulting corner.

Barnsley started the second half strongly and pressed the Bantams right back almost from the first kick. Hassell again did well down the right to find Richards in the area on 48 minutes but the striker saw his shot well blocked after a neat turn. Seconds later Hayes was manhandled the ground in the six yard box as he controlled another Hassell cross but yet again the Reds were given nothing from either official.

City were always going to be a threat on the counter attack and Cooke almost grabbed a second when he shot wide on 51 minutes.

The Bradford pressure was only temporary and the Reds piled down the other with Devaney and Richards combining wonderfully well to free Hayes in the centre and the striker rifled a shot into the roof of the net to level the tie.

Barnsley were rampant and swept into the lead on 62 minutes as the City defence made a real mess of Shuker's corner and allowed Hassell to head the ball into the path of Paul Reid in the centre and the Reds skipper swept home the second of the night.

City were not finished and twice Cooke forced Flinders into saves after getting in behind before Bridge Wilkinson stung Flinders' hands with a rasping drive from fully 30 yards on 65 minutes.

The home side were level and back in the game on 66 minutes as it was Barnsley's turn to stand and watch from a corner as Weatherall met Muirhead's kick to give Bower a simple header into the net from six yards.

It got even worse for the Reds on 72 minutes as another Muirhead corner from the right was met by statuesque defending and Weatherall was given time space and the freedom of the Bradford & Bingley Stadium to plant a free header into the top corner.

The was still time for more drama as Hayes showed strength and determination to race onto Austin's long clearance and coolly slotted the ball under Howarth for his second of the evening.

It was all Barnsley again after the sixth goal with Devaney, Shuker, Hayes and Hassell all causing City no end of problems. Burns thought he had won it on 90 minutes with a rasping drive from the edge of the area but his shot flew just wide of the target.

At the other end Bradford had the ball in the back of the net on 92 minutes as Cooke headed past Flinders but the striker was a good five yards offside. Flinders then had to be at his very best to stop Muirhead

Both sides came out fighting at the start of extra time with Richards hammering over at one end before Cadamarteri saw a shot blocked seconds later.

Barnsley grabbed the lead in dramatic circumstances again on 97 minutes as Hayes battled his way to the byline before digging out a perfect cross to catch Howarth in no mans land and Devaney appeared out of nowhere to put the ball into the back of the net.

The Reds almost gifted City another equaliser on 100 minutes as Burns clearance fell straight to Windass in the area but the veteran striker lashed a shot high into the stand. Cooke then battled his way into a shooting position on 102 minutes as he turned well but shot wide of the target.

Richards really should have wrapped the game up on 106 minutes after a barnstorming run down the right by Nicky Wroe which ended with a great pull back for the striker but he blasted high over the top of Howarth's goal.

It was five on 110 minutes as Devaney beat the offside trap and skinned an aging and leggy Bantams defence to Richards through ball before slotting his shot under the onrushing Howarth.

Still Barnsley picked City apart with ease and Burns brought a fine diving save out of Howarth on 117 minutes after Hayes had danced into space in the area.
