BARNSLEY 1 (Hayes 42)
BRADFORDCITY 1 (Edghill 80)
AFTER being second best throughout, the Reds managed to get within ten minutes of a victory but Bradford levelled late on and both teams will have to battle it out again in a replay.
Injuries forced Reds boss Andy Ritchie into a host of changes with Paul Reid, Stephen McPhail and Nick Colgan all missing out. Scott Flinders, Antony Kay and Dale Tonge all came into the side.
Former Red Lee Crooks missed a return to his former stomping ground after picking up an injury in training as City went for attack in midfield with Steven Schumacher and Marc Bridge Wilkinson.
Barnsley started brightly with Martin Devaney again causing problems for the Bantams defence in the first minute and crossing well but just could not get his toe on the ball to turn it into the net from six yards under pressure from Donovan Ricketts.
The visitors came forward and forced a corner on five minutes which Ben Muirhead swung over but Dean Windass put a free header just wide of the target. At the other end Paul Hayes sent Richards free on eight minutes but the striker rather rushed his effort and Mark Bower was in the right place to block.
Bradford began the better and Danny Cadamarteri found acres of space 30 yards from goal two minutes later and brought a fine save from Flinders with a well-struck shot. Tonge then brought the very best from Ricketts with a volley from 25 yards that arrowed towards the bottom corner but the Bantams keeper did well to turn the ball away for a corner.
A minute later Flinders and Antony Kay made a complete mess of things in the area and the ball fell nicely to Windass on the six yard box but the veteran dragged his shot high over the top. Windass again got in on 15 minutes as he broke free to reach Bower's header but again lashed his shot wide of the target.
Another Muirhead corner caused problems on 20 minutes as the ball finally fell out to Bridge Wilkinson on the edge of the area but this time the midfielder dragged a shot wide Flinders goal.
Barnsley finally got things right on 23 minutes as Hayes played Devaney in down the left channel and the winger curled his shot inches wide of the far post and away.
Cadamarteri managed to find space after hauling back Bobby Hassell on 28 minutes and found Windass in space but again the striker, who must have forgotten to pack his shooting boots in the opening stages, lashed a volley high over the top.
Bradford were well in control and pushed forward at well. Steve Schumacher managed to run 20 yards forward on 35 minutes but hammered his shot high over the top.
Barnsley's frustrations boiled over on 37 minutes as Hassell's lunge sent Morrison flying on the half way line and earned the full back a booking. Austin was then caught out by Muirhead a minute later and was shown a yellow card for another wild tackle.
The opening goal came completely against the run of play on 42 minutes as Burns swung a great cross over for Hassell to nod on and Hayes was in the right place to fire home from close range.
Again City started the better with Morrison cutting inside and finding Bridge Wilkinson on the edge of the area but again the Bradford midfielder could only drive high over the top. At the other end Chris Shuker crossed well for Hayes but this time the Bantams back line managed to clear.
Bantams full back Lewis Emanuel somehow escaped a red card on 55 minutes as he made no attempt to plat the ball and scythed down Shuker on the half way line. Emanuel was only shown a yellow.
Devaney then showed a clear pair of heels to the City defence on the hour mark as he raced clear before shooting inches wide of Rickett's far post. Burns then tried his luck from 30 yards on 68 minutes but Ricketts was in the right place to grab his goalbound effort.
Bradford had the ball in the back of the net on 70 minutes as Windass reacted quickly to turn Muirhead's cross past Flinders but the striker was denied by an offside flag. Schumacher really should have levelled things on 78 minutes as he rose highest to meet Muirhead's cross but turned a free header over the bar from just six yards.
At the other end Kay really ought to have killed the game a minute later as he glanced Shuker's corned well wide.
It was a costly miss as City went straight down the other end and equalised. Full back Edghill took two attempts but shot straight through a crowd and straight through Flinders into the back of the net.
