BARNSLEY crashed out of the Carling Cup at Turf Moor after a much-changed Reds side slumped to a heavy defeat.
Andy Ritchie made four changes for the Reds second trip to Lancashire in the Carling Cup. In came Scott Flinders and Dale Tonge along with a new front pairing of Daniel Nardiello and Marc Richards.
The Reds looked lively for the first few minutes but so did the home side with Scott Flinders having to make crucial saves as early as the third minute. One from a Jason O'Connor shot and then from a good move by Burnley resulting in a strike at goal from Ade Akinbiyi.
A good defensive challenge by Dale Tonge on eleven minutes saw the Reds get their first real break of the game. Jacob Burns fed Robbie Williams with a through ball and he should have done better but the shot left a lot to be desired and was easily saved by Danny Coyne in the Burnley goal.
Nardiello should have opened the scoring on 18 minutes after Burns and Shuker combined well. Shuker then found Nardiello in acres of space on the far side of the box but his shot was a little too quick and flashed over the bar.
Burnley finally managed to take charge of the game just short of the half hour mark. They won a corner which was taken to the near post by John Spicer. Flinders came for the ball but couldn't get there before Micah Hyde was able to flick the ball to an unmarked Keith Lowe who had the easiest of chances and put the ball into the back of the net comfortably.
It could have been two just before half time but Flinders was on hand to make an excellent save from Gareth O'Connor.
The second Burnley goal eventually came on 52 minutes. A long ball form keeper Coyne found Ade Akinbiyi who had beaten the off side trap. He took the ball with skill and managed to round Flinders and slot the ball into an empty net.
Five minutes later the tie was dead and buried and John Spicer managed to latch onto a loose ball within the Barnsley defence and fire a low shot past Flinders.
Jacob Burns was substituted by Stephen McPhail on 64 minutes and then a double substitution on 70 minutes saw Conlon and Hayes come on to replace Nadiello and Richards but this, and some more fine gaolkeeping from Scott Flinders was not enough to stop the Reds exiting the Carling Cup at the second hurdle.
