SIR BOBBY

Posted on: Sun 02 Aug 2009

www.barnsleyfc.co.uk editor and Barnsley FC Head of Media Rob Knowles casts his eye over the beautiful game in our weekly column.

EVERY football fan should really stop, pause and take a moment to remember the life of Sir Bobby Robson - one of the greatest ambassadors of the beautiful game this country has ever produced.

Sir Bobby epitomised everything that was good about football in England. He transcended club rivalries, was loved by every football fan and respected by everybody in the game. He was a gentleman and the only England manager to get anywhere near replicating the class of 1966. Few who watched back in 1990 will ever forget the heartbreak of losing a World Cup Semi Final.

Sir Alex Ferguson said of Robson: "I was never too big or proud to ask him for advice which he gave freely and unconditionally. And I'm sure I am speaking for a lot of people when I say that".

England's 1990 hero Paul Gascoigne added: "I'm speechless. I'm devastated. Bobby was like my second dad. I was like a son to him".

The tributes just keep coming.

Bryan Robson said: "I have never come across anybody with such a passion for football. We had a tremendous personal relationship as manager and skipper".

Jose Mourinho added: "Bobby Robson is one of those people who never die, not so much for what he did in his career, for one victory more or less, but for what he knew to give to those who had, like me, the good fortune to know him and walk by his side".

There are more. A lot more. Sir Bobby personified the best of English football from a different time when respect and dignity was all important. He brought out the best in his players and was universally loved. There is something missing from the game in England now.
