MASTERS DIFFICULTY

Posted on: Mon 06 Jul 2009

www.barnsleyfc.co.uk editor and Barnsley FC Head of Media Rob Knowles casts his eye over the beautiful game in our weekly column.

TALK about a tough job. We've spent the last few weeks working with Masters Football trying to put together a team of ex-Reds for July's event at the Sheffield Arena.

Easy. Or so a lot of people think. It has proved to be anything but that, although the search is still going on to get a team of former Barnsley players together to face the likes of Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday, Leeds and Doncaster on July 18.

Everybody starts with the same names - Redfearn, Hendrie, Hignett, Wilkinson, Barnard. Unfortunately all of them play for other teams in this year's competition and cannot line up for the Reds - Redfearn with Wigan; Hendrie, Hignett and Wilkinson at Boro and Barnard with Chelsea. Add the fact that Clint Marcelle is coaching in Trinidad; Adie Moses and Bruce Dyer have not yet reached the minimum age and the list shortens a bit.

Masters Football still have a long list of names to work through after getting Kevin Miller, Jim Dobbin, Wayne Biggins, Neil Thompson and Deiniol Graham to pull on a Barnsley shirt again. There's a real crowd favourite to be announced shortly and a lot of work being done by Masters Football to get more involved.

Pre-season has started here at Oakwell and things kicked off last Wednesday in blistering heat. The squad look in great shape and high spirits heading to Buxton for Thursday's opener. It should be a great game and, finally, it will be fantastic to get back to watching football after a long summer.

Bring it on.
