Winnall Delighted With Double

12 April 2016

Match-winner and twenty-goal striker Sam Winnall spoke to the press after securing three points against Oldham at Oakwell.

Winnall’s 83rd minute penalty was his twentieth strike of the season, and Winnall said he wants more!

Speaking after the game, Winnall said, “Yeah it was a good night, in the end! We got there in the end and got the three points, that’s all that matters. We didn’t want to let them back in the game at half-time, the emphasis was on keeping a clean sheet and then us getting that next goal.

“Unfortunately we did concede, but thankfully a great set-piece by Conor (Hourihane) and Adam (Hammill) has led to a penalty and I’ve put it in the net, then we saw the game out for a huge three points!

“I think that’s the third time after a loss this season we’ve gone on to win.” He continued. “We did it after Southend, we did it after Gillingham and we’ve done it again today so it does show a lot of character for our dressing room, and we couldn’t be happier with the win today and it has put us back in with a shout.”

Winnall then gave his thoughts after scoring his milestone goal.

“It’s not bad, but I’m greedy, I always want more!” He explained. “I just keep striving for more goals. I could have had more but that’s the life of a striker, you score some, you miss some. Thankfully today all that was required was two goals.”

The Reds have seen a few different penalty takers this season, but Winnall said they’re his now!

Winnall mentioned, “To be fair to Conor (Hourihane) he said after the Southend game that he’s missed two so I can have the next one. We waited a while before we got the next penalty but thankfully I was on the pitch still and I stepped up and put it in the net.”

Barnsley’s leading scorer this term ended with a few words about Saturday’s opponents, Burton Albion.

“They’ve got a style of play that works for them and they’ve stuck to it all season. We’re going there full of confidence after this win and we want to go and get the three points.”
