Win For Reds in Pre-Season Opener

11 July 2015

Stalybridge Celtic 0
Reds 1 (Chalmers O.G. 61)

The Reds opened up their pre-season campaign with a win at Stalybridge Celtic thanks to an own goal which arrived in the second half.

All of Head Coach Lee Johnson's new signings got a run out, with Conor Wilkinson and Marley Watkins supporting Sam Winnall in attack at the start and Marc Roberts partnering Alfie Mawson at the back.

Winnall backed up his Head Coach's praise for looking sharp in pre-season training as the forward had a spring in his step from the off for Barnsley. The former Scunthorpe man managed one clear-cut opportunity, but hammered his shot the wrong side of the far post with his left foot from inside the box.

Christian Dibble made a decent one-on-one save as Barnsley's back line became rarely breached just before the midway point of the tie.

Finally the opening goal arrived and it came just less than a minute past the hour mark. Josh Scowen latched on to Drennan's clearance from a corner and charged into Celtic's half. The midfielder showed great pace and managed to work in a cross from the left which was met by defender Aarron Chalmers who chested into his own net.

"I'm very grateful to Stalybridge," said Head Coach Lee Johnson after the game. "They've put on a good game for us on a good surface.

"I thought five or six of our lads did pretty well. There was a lot more to come from a few others. Our front three looked quite lively on the counter-attack. Our back two looked strong.

"It's a clean sheet which is good and we could have scored from our chances. It's tough because when you're up against a non-league side, they're wanting to show you what they can do."

Reds: Dibble, Bree (Williams 46), Mawson (Cowgill 61), Roberts (Nyatanga 46), Smith (Templeton 61), Digby (Abbott 61), Scowen (Evans 61 (Gooda 82)), Vigurs (Drennan 61), Wilkinson (Maris 46), Winnall (Brown 61), Watkins (Ofori 61).
