We Head to Wigan With No Fear - Wilson

18 February 2014

Reds Manager Danny Wilson gave his thoughts ahead of returning to hometown club Wigan Athletic with Barnsley tonight.

Whilst the Latics look for a place in the top six, Wilson is hopeful his side can spring a surprise on Uwe Rosler’s team.

“We’ll have a look at Wigan but they’re very difficult to assess how they will play because they’ve got such a big squad,” said Wilson. “They can change their team on a regular basis.
“We’ve got one or two niggles but nothing I’m too concerned about at this stage.
“Jack’s (Hunt) match fitness is nowhere near what it should be. That’s nothing to do with him, it’s just he’s been out for a such a long time. We’ll look at him and Martin Woods as well. Manny Frimpong got a kick on the knee as well.

“At the same time, we have to put a team out that not only works defensively but is also a threat at the other end.”

The Reds head into tonight’s match off the back of two successive 2-2 draws against Ipswich and Doncaster Rovers.

“We want to turn these draws into wins, that goes without saying”, added Wilson.

“We’ve got to make sure we can control our own destiny, that’s the biggest things.
“I have to say we’ve had some strong performances this last few weeks. The signs are good. We’ve got 17 games left and a lot of points to play for.

“We have to start turning those chances or games that are chances, into three points.”

Wigan sit in ninth place in the Sky Bet Championship and have two games in hand of sixth-placed Reading.

“I think they’ve got one of the strongest squads in the league” continued Wilson. “They’re more than capable of playing at a higher level, but they’re not at the moment.

“Just because we’re going there bottom of the league, it doesn’t give them points automatically. I’m going there to win the game. They’re a fantastic set-up and I’ve got enormous respect for Uwe, he’s a good friend of mine. They’re doing well and they’re well-positioned in the league, but we stand in their way.

“We go there without any sort of fear at all.

“They’ve got so many good players. They’re rotating their squad very well and they’re getting results.

“We’re not writing this game off. In a lot of people’s eyes we’re just going to make the numbers up.”
