U18s Report: Sheff Wed 0 Barnsley 1

8 January 2014

Sheff Wed 0
Barnsley 1 (Nana)

Striker Nana notched his sixth goal of the season at Sheffield Wednesday to bring the points back to Oakwell for the Under 18s.

“It was a very good game of football,” said Academy Manager, Ronnie Branson. “Both teams tried to play the right way and the conditions were excellent in terms of the condition of the pitch for the time of year.”

The Reds set off quickly out of the blocks and had time to miss a decent chance before Nana opened the scoring after just five minutes. George Smith’s well-placed through-ball was latched onto by the former West Ham man, who struck home in at the near post.

We had lots of chances but struggled to finish them off,” added Branson. “Because of the slender score-line you’re always worried about the other team nicking one and to be fair to them (Sheffield Wednesday) they didn’t throw the towel in.

“In the second half we had three one-on-ones and their ‘keeper made some really good saves. But so did our goalkeeper, Elliott. He kept us in front at certain points.

“It was a strange game because it should have been out of sight, but it never was. Away at Sheffield Wednesday to get a one-nil win in a local derby, is always pleasing.

“With it being a local derby, we both know a lot about each other so you end up cancelling each other out a little bit. To get into the one-on-one situations were brilliant but the lads need to kill the game off.”

Reds: Chadderton, Bree, Smith, Holgate, Freeman, Biggins, Hancock (Rogerson 5), McHale, Pilkington, Nana, Maris.
