Mellis Wants More After Great Free-Kick

2 January 2014

Reds midfielder Jacob Mellis notched his second goal of the season at Birmingham City yesterday with a fine free-kick to haul his side level.

Speaking after the one-all draw, Mellis reflected, “It’s good to come here and get a point. They’ve been on good form so it’s good to come here and get a point away from home.

“I’m hoping to get some more (goals) because I had a couple of chances in the first half I didn’t put away but I’m glad to get the goal in the second half.

“I don’t normally practice them (free-kicks) but I did yesterday (Tuesday) and, luckily, this one’s gone in!

“I saw a gap so I just put it round.”

Nikola Zigic gave the hosts the lead before Jacob’s well-placed 61st-minute free-kick, and the former Chelsea man believes the Reds are playing as more of a unit.

“We went away from home against Leeds and got a point,” he added. “We’re not shipping goals easily. Obviously we were disappointing to concede early on but we’re bringing those margins down.

“When we’re attacking, we’re attacking with pace. We’re a lot more direct but that doesn’t mean long balls, we’re moving the ball quickly across the pitch and getting bodies in the box, which is what the gaffer wants.

“He’s (Danny Wilson) fair with everyone, he says if we’re not performing we’ll not play. So everyone is on their toes, fighting for a place in the squad and in the starting line-up.”
