Luke Steele Leaves Barnsley For Panathinaikos

18 July 2014

Barnsley Football Club can confirm goalkeeper Luke Steele has left Oakwell to join Greek side Panathinaikos, with confirmation of his departure received in the last few minutes (4:36pm).

Steele joined the Reds in February 2008, initially on a one-month emergency loan, and enjoyed an unforgettable début – a victory at Anfield over Liverpool in the FA Cup Fifth Round.

After extending his stay at Oakwell, he would eventually sign permanently in May 2008 and went on to make 227 appearances in total, winning Player of the Year for the 2011/12 campaign.

A clause in Luke’s contract allowed the goalkeeper to leave on a free transfer should the Club have been relegated from the Championship. This agreement was reached following contract negotiations last summer – which also included a considerable reduction in salary should the club be relegated.

The Club would like to place on record its gratitude to Luke for his hard work and dedication during his memorable time at Oakwell and wish him the best of luck with his future career.
