Lee Johnson's Doncaster Rovers Reaction

3 October 2015

Reds boss Lee Johnson spoke to the press after today's late defeat in the South Yorkshire derby at Doncaster Rovers.

Despite the last minute defeat hurting so much, Johnson saw the positives as his side dominated the match.

“It was a killer blow,” he said. “I was pleased with the players' performance, I thought we ran the game from ten minutes onward. On another day we come out winning that game comfortably.”

“The two goals were unfortunate,” Johnson added. “We didn’t stop a cross for the first and the second one is a poor one to concede.”

After Sam Winnall's equaliser on the hour, Johnson wanted his side to go for the winner, but he doesn’t feel that trying to win the game meant they lost it.

“We tried to win the game,” said Johnson. “I thought we were unlucky not to nick one in the last ten minutes after the substitutions. We went for it and that didn’t lose us the game, but we have come out with a sucker-punch and no points.

“The fans were superb, I feel sorry for them, they will be going home wondering how we have lost that. They deserved a win and the players really tried to give it to them.”

The Reds Head Coach was quick to state that he wanted his team to move on swiftly and look towards Tuesday nights encounter with Bradford in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.  “We have to move on quickly and we have a big game Tuesday. We will take the JPT very seriously,” Johnson confirmed.

“We have a squad we will use it, but it’s one we really want to win.”

The gaffer ended by saying, “The footballing gods weren’t with us today, but we now go into games knowing we have a good chance.”
