Lee Johnson's Colchester Reaction

12 December 2015

A relieved, but delighted Lee Johnson spoke to the press after seeing the Reds’ win 3-2 away at Colchester, in a match which was certainly ‘a game of two halves.’

“I thought first half we were outstanding” Said Johnson. “I thought we were great and really solid and limited them to nothing, we could have had a couple more before half time.

“They had a couple of warning shots which at times we dealt with it and times we didn’t. I am disappointed in the last 25 minutes but delighted to win it.

“It’s still a young group but all our solidness and great shape first half went to pot second half. All I wanted to do is remind everyone that this is a really big win for us, over 90 minutes we fully deserved it. Our performances have been consistent but yes we are conceding too many goals. We can get a decent little run now.”

The Reds have not had the results their performances have merited of late, so Head Coach Johnson was delighted to see all their hard work pay off.

“Our front two first half were excellent, the interplay is something we’ve not had enough of.” Explained Johnson. “They were a constant threat with their little one two’s and I thought we should have had a penalty.

“We were dangerous and I am pleased Ivan (Toney) got a goal. We have to keep sending our fans home happy now, they were fantastic today and there were a good number of them singing in the cold. They willed us to keep the win in the last 5 minutes.

“Whether it was a scrappy 1-0 or 3-2, the objective was 3 points and we’ve got that, and for that I congratulated the players. Adam (Hammill) and Ivan (Toney) are two good signings that we’ve made it and it just goes to show the difference today that they’ve made.

“I’ll watch the game back. It’s never as good as you think, but it’s never as bad as you think. We’re still educating young players and it will be a factor in how quick they learn their lessons. They need to know how to kill a game off.

“We’re very close as you saw first half, but we need to cut the mistakes. Overall it’s been a really positive day for us.”
