Lee Johnson's Bradford City Reaction

26 January 2016

Reds Head Coach Lee Johnson saw his side pick up their fifth league win on the bounce after a hard-fought Yorkshire derby at Bradford City.

Speaking after the game, Johnson said "If I'm honest I thought we were average in possession. We defended like trojans because we had to, coming to Bradford.

"I thought we had some really good chances even though we had minimal possession for us - because we normally have a lot more possession - on the counter-attack we still got four or five chances.

"In fairness to them, they hustled us, they hurried us and put a lot of balls into our box and had a couple of chances themselves, but mainly down to our mistakes.

"Sometimes it can be a good thing that you get in that defensive mindset because you're switched on to runners and everybody is doubling up for each other and that was one of our strengths tonight.

"Our fans roared us on. We showed a really good spirit to come to a tough place and get a result."

Marley Watkins scored in the third minute with a glancing header, which proved to be the only goal of the game on a wet and windy evening.

"I think that settled the group because it's a young-pup group and we've had a couple of injuries that have killed us a bit," continued Johnson.

"I thought George Williams coming in playing his wrong position was outstanding because Marshall's a tricky player. I thought James Bree became a man tonight, in my opinion.

"The other lads worked their socks off even though they didn't play great."

As well as the missing Adam Hammill, of which Johnson confirmed would be out for four weeks, Alfie Mawson was an early withdrawal from tonight's win - with Johnson adding:

"Alfie's felt something go in his groin so it could just be that his stretched it but it's probably a slight strain.

"He's a huge player for us. It's like Real Madrid losing Ronaldo! That's how key he is to us. But the lads did well today and we've got another win. It was probably more heart than quality but that's nice to see because earlier on in the season we might have capitulated and got done-in three or four-two."3
