Lee Johnson on Shrewsbury Town

3 September 2015

Ahead of Barnsley’s clash with Shrewsbury, Reds Head Coach Lee Johnson spoke about what to expect from Saturday’s opponents.

The team are fresh off the back of their Johnstone’s Paint Trophy success over Scunthorpe and there are no fresh concerns for Johnson.

He said: “We’re looking very strong. We’ve brought in Michael Smith, we have no new injury worries from Tuesday night and we rested a couple of players and we have a couple coming back.

“Conor Wilkinson is away on international duty and that’s the one bit of team news that has changed.”

Former Tykes Assistant Manager Micky Mellon will bring his newly-promoted Shrewsbury side to Oakwell and they are still searching for their first away league win of the season.

“They’re a decent side,” Johnson commented. “They are strong on set-pieces and play a very expansive game. The former manager will be looking to come back and do well but it’s a good game for us.

“It’s another really tough game. I think they’ll have a good season they’ve just had a poor start and we have to capitalise on that.”

Despite a busy deadline day, Johnson is hopeful of being able to add another player to the squad later today.

“We’re hoping to add Simeon Jackson,” Johnson explained. “He’s been training with us since the start of the season and he has been excellent.

“He’s been a really good lad to have around the place, he’s a good finisher and somebody who has got that experience of getting promotions and scoring goals at this level.” he added.

The new arrivals have helped to strengthen the squad and means that picking a team is no longer straight forward for Johnson.

He continued, “Previously it’s been quite easy to pick a team but now it’s going to be difficult. I’ll have to manage my players very well.

“When we play with energy we’re very good and when we don’t we’re very bad. It’s a fine line and I’ll have to go against the grain to pick teams that play with energy because that is so important to us.

“I will play the best players and the team that I think will go and win the game. Every game is different and we try and impose our strengths on the opponents.”
