Heckingbottom's Chesterfield Reaction

9 April 2016

Paul Heckingbottom was disappointed as he addressed the press following the loss against Chesterfield at Oakwell. Heckingbottom was pleased with how his side played, but felt they got punished for two mistakes.

Heckingbottom explained, “We are obviously disappointed with the result but we can’t be disappointed with the performance because we felt with the ball we played well and created chances.

“We’re really disappointed with their goals and it’s something we’ll look at.” He added. “I just said to the players there when they came in, that that’s why we’ve been winning games we shouldn’t have because of the organisation and discipline. One player makes a mistake, but someone else is there to cover it and the two times we didn’t do that today they’ve scored a goal.

“We’ve won games playing nowhere near as good as that and creating nowhere near as many chances. Today, we’ve been killed for not doing the other side of the game.”

After Adam Hammill equalised, then Jamal Campbell-Ryce saw red, Heckingbottom said that himself and Tommy Wright were confident of winning the match.

“About five minutes before we scored, myself and Tommy (Wright) were on the side-lines and we felt comfortable. We both said if we scored a goal, it’s ours but obviously we got that wrong!”

He continued, “In all honesty everything we asked them to do, they did it. Even first half when we didn’t have as many shots and crosses as we wanted, what we did do was dangerous and we got in some dangerous positions.

“The energy was there, the willingness to press up the pitch was there, the two centre-backs played well. Everything we asked, they did it, but it’s the non-negotiable bits that we’ve done ever so well on this run that let us down today.

“Besides the chances and shots we had, we had a lot of good positions and good countering opportunities. On another day we could have, and should have, got more chances from that.

“It was a real competitive game, we picked up some knocks in challenges which is to be expected but they ran them off. There’s some tired bodies, but we’re pleased with their application and the way they went about their roles and responsibilities.”
