Hammill 'Over The Moon' After Perfect Reds Return

10 November 2015

After his man-of-the-match performance and winning goal against York City, Adam Hammill spoke to the press.

The midfielder made his return to Oakwell after a four-year absence and reflected on his first game under the floodlights for the Reds.

Hammill said: “I’m delighted on a personal basis but more so for the lads. The past week I’ve seen the talent but the lads needed geeing up.

“We needed to end the streak and we’re delighted to get the win and we’re now only a few games away from Wembley.

“We have to take that into Saturday and every league game. I think I’ve come in and added a little bit of experience and I’ve taken that responsibility and I’m thriving on it.”

Hammill provided the assist for Ben Pearson’s equaliser and added the winner seven minutes from time and reflected on his strike.

“I’m over the moon,” he added. “I got ball out wide and thought I had the beating of the full back all night. I jinked inside him a few times and had only one intention, to put the ball in the top corner.

“I’ve done that here a few times but none of them were as sweet as that let me tell you.”

This is the second spell at Barnsley for Hammill and he said that his fondness for the club made the decision to return an easy one.

“I hold a lot of fond memories of this place and hold the people and fans in high regard. They gave me an opportunity to showcase myself and I’m here again today the same.”

“The fans have welcomed me back with open arms and that was one of the main reasons why I re-joined because I had a few options.

“Personally it was about getting somewhere I felt at home and loved and that’s why I believe will happen here.”

Hammill feels he is a more mature player on his return to Oakwell, adding: “I feel I’ve grown up a lot recently and I’ve added that to my game.

“You have to be a leader on the pitch and that’s what I have to be. I was really down about my mistakes and I just want to show everyone that I’m not only a good player, but a good person.

“It’s about re-establishing myself and putting in that extra mile on the pitch. I’ve turned a leaf in my life and grown up and it’s time for me to fill the potential I’ve had and work as hard as I have ever worked.”
