Full Time: Reds 1 Club Brugge 1

12 July 2013

Reds 1 (Dagnall 10)
Club Brugge 1 (Vazquez 11)

The two sides shared a goal each in the space of 60 first-half seconds as pre-season got underway at Oakwell between the Reds and Club Brugge with a 1-1 draw.

With ten minutes gone, Dagnall latched onto a decent through-ball on the right but when the angle seemed to narrow, he unleashed an incredible strike into the top corner from the corner of the penalty area.

But the Belgians’ reply was immediate, albeit with a slice of good fortune. Vazquez found space and curled a low shot at goal which deflected past a despairing Alnwick.

The away side looked good in possession, and had a couple of pot shots at goal from distance that sailed wide. Stephen Dawson had the Reds’ next chance with a lofted attempt from 20 yards that went straight at Ryan as the Irishman latched onto Dagnall’s nod-down.

Lestienne went in on 38 minutes but saw his shot strike the foot of Alnwick’s right-hand post with Alnwick beaten.

Second half

The first three efforts of the second half belonged to the Reds. First up Dagnall hammered wide after picking up on a loose ball from Club Brugge. The quick-thinking of Perkins to take a free-kick quickly meant he had a free shot at goal from 25 yards that seemed to be dipping in but Ryan expertly tipped over.

Dawson then cracked one straight at Ryan after galloping into the box down the right before the visitors went close at the other end. Wang went in on Steele and rounded him off well but his shot was remarkably cleared off the line by Nyatanga who appeared from nowhere on 57 minutes.

It appeared Dagnall had found his second when he turned home a rebound but the linesman’s flag was raised on the near side.

The Reds made 10 changes on 63 minutes, with the likes of youngster Digby, Patterson, Clark and Scott given a run out.

When Digby put his foot through a lay-off it was a shame his thunderbolt of a strike struck a team-mate in the box, as his strike seemed destined for the top corner on 74 minutes.

Two Academy graduates combined when Noble-Lazarus put Clark in but his shot hammered the bar in what was a great move.
