Steele has been at Panathinaikos for the last 24 hours to hold talks, but as yet the paperwork has not been finalised.
The Club will release a further statement when appropriate.
Barnsley Football Club can confirm Luke Steele has been given permission to talk to Greek side Panathinaikos.
