Young Reds Supporter Leads Out His Heroes!

26 September 2016

For our recent home game against Reading, we were honoured to welcome 8-year-old Joe Pearson as one of our guest mascots.

Joe has cerebral palsy and at such an early age, has had various surgeries to help him live a more comfortable life. Having recently been in and out of both Sheffield Children’s Hospital and Barnsley Hospital, Joe got the unique opportunity to have a special experience and went behind-the-scenes to meet his Barnsley heroes and lead out the teams.

Joe's bravery and determination is an inspiration to us all and we were thrilled to invite him and his family to Oakwell as our special guests for our recent game against Reading.

Joe’s mum Gemma Pearson, commented, “An old school friend of mine contacted the Club to arrange a special day for Joe and after a long stay in hospital, Joe was offered the chance to be a mascot for the day! Joe's favorite thing is football and particularly Barnsley FC. If he could walk he'd be on the pitch with them as he kicks his legs for 90 minutes watching the game! So having the chance to meet the players, club staff and hold the match ball before the kick-off was amazing for him. Joe smiled from start to finish. He had photos with the players and he absolutely loved it. He was particularly fond of Tommy Wright, I think there’s a bond there! Everyone couldn't do enough for us. We honestly can't thank the club enough for giving Joe and us a day to remember! It was amazing!”

We are delighted that Joe and his family enjoyed their day at Oakwell!

As part of our community programme, the Club is committed to providing special experiences for other Reds fans throughout the 2016/17 season. We are always happy to hear of people who are worthy of these once-in-a-lifetime experiences. To recommend a fan, please send us their story by e-mail to fans@barnsleyfc.co.uk.
