U18s | REPORT: Barnsley 3-1 Millwall

15 April 2017

Reds end the season on a high against 10-man Lions!

Barnsley Under 18s finished their Professional Development League season in style with a 3-1 victory against Millwall at Oakwell.

Danny Greenfield almost put the Reds ahead within three minutes only for Sam Jackson to bat his effort over the crossbar, while George Alexander did put the ball in the net for the visitors, only for his effort to be judged offside.

Barnsley took the lead eight minutes before the break when Tom Clare rifled home from close range following Kane Swinburn's knock down, only for Joe Wicks to fire in from the edge of the area four minutes later to level the contest.

Clare bagged his second seven minutes into the second half, slotting home after Wilberforce Ocran's effort was parried and Swinburn put the icing on the cake six minutes from time with a stunning free kick.

The Lions were reduced to 10 men moments before the end when Alexander was shown a straight red card for a poorly timed challenge on Swinburn but the Reds finished strongly to secure all the points.

From the first whistle, Barnsley were keen to take the game to the visitors, fashioning the first chance of the game through Danny Greenfield, but he watched his dipping effort clawed out.

Millwall came close to breaking the deadlock midway through the half with Mason Saunder-Henry glancing Isaac Olaofe's cross just wide, before Alexander's looping header was ruled out for offside.

The Reds were the first to strike seven minutes before the break when Will Smith 's cross was nodded down by Kane Swinburn, allowing Clare to thump home the opener from close range.

But the lead lasted only four minutes as Joe Wicks took aim from the edge of the area and his effort flew into the bottom corner, making it 1-1 at the interval.

HALF TIME: Barnsley 1-1 Millwall.

Clare added to his tally early in the second half, but there was some luck in how the ball fell to him. Great work from Wilberforce Ocran down the left was nearly rewarded, only for his shot to be parried across the face of goal, with Clare all too keen to fire home the loose ball.

In a half of few chances, Wicks' dangerous delivery required just a touch to beat Greatorex, but no one in blue could connect, whilst Harry Taylor's turn and shot fizzed just wide.

However, it took a moment of brilliance from Swinburn to secure all the points. His 25 yard free kick flew into the top corner to earn Chris Howarth and Martin Devaney's side all three points.

There was even time for a moment of late controversy when Swinburn was scythed by Alexander three minutes from time, resulting in a straight red card for the Millwall man.

Reds: Greatorex (GK), Alderton, Smith, Gagen, Simpson (Lund, 61' ), Swinburn, Tingle, Saeed (Sandu, 61' ), D. Greenfield, Ocran (Rowe, 67' ), Clare.

Subs: Murphy (GK).
