U18s | FA Youth Cup preview: Barnsley vs Carlisle United

16 December 2016

Reds must beat Carlisle this evening for a place in the fourth round!

Chris Howarth and Martin Devaney’s Barnsley Under 18s side entertain Carlisle United Under 18s this evening in the third round of the FA Youth Cup.

Barnsley are entering the competition at this stage, with big names including Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and holders Chelsea still in the competition.

If the Reds can find a way past the Cumbrians tonight, they will set up a meeting with Premier League outfit Leicester City Under 18s, who beat Leyton Orient 3-1.

The Reds have lost their last three matches at home and have only secured one win in their last six matches in the Professional Development League.

That aside, a dramatic late goal from Mo Saeed helped them to rescue a vital point in a 2-2 draw away to Sheffield United last time out.

The Reds may opt to recall full-back Louis Wardle, who has missed the last two matches with Romal Palmer also vying for a return following an injury sustained in the warm-up against Sheffield Wednesday.

Saeed could also start for the Reds after his goal last time out, but the winger has also been nursing a slight hamstring issue and will be assessed.

Finding the target is something the Reds have proved on more than enough occasions they can do, only failing to find the net once in their last 12 games.

This evening’s visitors arrive at Oakwell on a poor run of form that has seen them lose their last nine consecutive games.

However, they have only failed to score in one of those matches, so goals are set to be on the cards.

Prior to this run of form, the Blues had not lost any of their previous eight matches, winning seven of those matches, helping them to the top of the league.

They currently lie in 10th place in the Youth Alliance League table on 13 points, but have not managed a win in almost three months, when they edged out Wigan Athletic 3-2.

Kick off for this evening’s game is at 7pm on the Oakwell pitch. Entry is £3 for adults and £1 for concessions.

Only the West Stand will be open for tonight’s fixture.
