Barnsley FC has paid a visit to their local breast screening unit to show their support for Breast Cancer Awareness month.
Reds players, Sam Winnall and Marley Watkins visited the breast screening unit at Barnsley Hospital where they met the screening team and had a tour of the unit. The visit was an opportunity for the players to get an understanding of the important role breast screening plays in the early detection of breast cancer.
The Club is working in partnership with Barnsley Hospital’s breast screening unit in encouraging their female fans and local women to take up their all-important breast screening invites.
Reds forward Sam Winnall said, “I think it’s great the Club are getting behind the breast screening campaign and helping to reach out to local women.
“The visit was a great opportunity for us to find out why it is so important that women attend their routine screening appointments. Women attending their breast screening appointments every three years from the age of 50 can help detect the signs of cancer at an earlier stage and allow prompter treatment.”
Approximately one in eight women are diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Early detection through screening offers a better chance of successful treatment and full recovery.
Judith Clark, Superintendant Radiographer at Barnsley Hospital said, “Breast screening can pick up abnormalities that a woman may not be able to find herself which is why it is crucial women take up the opportunity to be screened.

Breast screening is offered to all women aged 50 to 70 every three years with some women beginning to be called up from the age of 47 as part of an age extension pilot.
