Shelley CFC 1-4 Reds XI: Match Report

3 August 2016

Shelley FC 1-4 Reds XI

A dominant display from a very young Reds XI side saw them run out comfortable 4-1 winners against West-Yorkshire side Shelley Community Football Club.

After leading at half-time through a strike from trialist, Dembele, second half goals from Jacob Brown, Tranni (another trialist), and finally James Carvelle, - who rounded off an excellent performance by curling in a free-kick from the edge of the box - secured an excellent victory.

Mark Burton's very youthful eleven kicked the match off and got off on the front foot instantly. With a lot of pace down either wing, right and left-backs Rhys Dolan and George Proctor instantly looked to get in behind the home-sides defence. As well as the wing-backs, Carvell was also causing the defence all sorts of problems in wide positions as well.

It took until only the 20th minute for the Reds to get their deserved breakthrough. Dembele picked the ball up following a quick break, went past two players and fired in a low shot giving the home keeper no chance. Just a minute later Proctor had the ball in the net following a surging run up the pitch, only to be flagged for offside.

As half-time approached, the ever-busy Carvell curled a free-kick onto the crossbar, coming so close to doubling the lead before the break.

Straight from kick-off in the second half, the Reds showed their intent and doubled their lead. Again it was Carvell who was the danger man as he went on a jinking run down the right hand-side before clipping in a delightful cross, which Jacob Brown volleyed home superbly at the back-post.

The floodgates then very nearly opened, and it wasn't long before Mark Burton's side went 3-0 up. A goal from trialist number two of the night, Tranni, rounded off a free-flowing team move as he tapped into an open net from Brown's pass which took the 'keeper out of the game.

It was no surprise to then see Carvell eventually get his name on the score-sheet. When second half substitute Brad Ash was fouled on the edge of the box, Carvell picked up the ball and placed his free-kick into the far corner giving the home side's number one no chance of stopping it.

There was however still time for the home side to register a goal. A long ball over the top bounced awkwardly and created confusion, which saw Shelley's number nine flick the ball past the helpless Jack Walton.
