Romal Palmer Signs Professional Contract!

5 January 2017

We are pleased to announce that Romal Palmer has today been rewarded for his fine performances in the development sides with a professional contract.

The midfielder, who has played a huge part in both the Reds U18s and U23s teams has penned an 18-month professional contract at Oakwell, following in the recent footsteps of fellow development players and teammates, Jacob Brown, Josh Kay and Dylan Mottley-Henry.

During pre-season, Palmer was part of a superb Reds team goal and influential in the move, showing terrific skill and vision. The video gained worldwide recognition and helped to showcase his ability on a large scale. Footage of Palmer in action with his Reds teammates can be found on our exclusive interview with him on Barnsley Player HD!

Working closely with Chris Howarth and Martin Devaney, Palmer has been given the opportunity to remain with the Reds and progress towards the first team.

Upon signing the deal, Palmer said, “I’m really delighted to have signed my first professional contract. I’ve learnt so much in my time here on the field and mentally as well so now I hope I can build on this to try and to progress to the first team. I know that I am at a Club that will give the younger players the chance to play and progress if they deserve it and that has already happened this season with Josh (Kay) and Browny (Jacob Brown) who have both made their debuts. It’s a good time to be at Barnsley and I want to thank everyone who has given me the chance to stay here and helped me as a footballer.

Reds Academy Manager Bobby Hassell said, “Romal has been rewarded for his hard work and dedication with us. His performances have been excellent but it isn’t always just about performances, it’s about having the right attitude the willingness to learn whilst playing to our philosophies. He has been given an opportunity now and we hope he can keep working hard and progress towards the first team. Special praise needs to go to Chris Howarth and Martin Devaney for the work they have done with Romal throughout his time in the Academy, they have really progressed him as a player.
