REPORT: Barnsley 1-1 Burton Albion

29 April 2017

Reds' final match at Oakwell this season ends in a 1-1 draw with Burton Albion.

Barnsley rounded off their home campaign with a 1-1 draw against Burton Albion.

Early chances for George Moncur and Bradshaw were saved by Stephen Bywater but the Reds took the lead just before half time when Moncur finished off Tom Bradshaw’s pass.

Angus MacDonald’s ambitious overhead kick almost doubled the Reds’ lead moments into the second half only for Bywater to save well, with Luke Varney equalising moments later with his first touch after coming on.

Neither side was able to find a winner as the game pressed on, with Ryan Kent firing just over and Varney denied by a smart save from Adam Davies.

Bradshaw was unable to snatch all the points in stoppage time when he stabbed toward goal, but Bywater stood firm, preserving the point Burton needed to stay in the Championship for another season.

There weren’t even 60 seconds on the clock when George Moncur attempted to beat Stephen Bywater from long range, with the stopper getting everything behind the ball to gather.

Michael Kightly forced his way into a good position moments later but his attempted pull back had too much on it for everyone, drifting harmlessly clear.

Jackson Irvine’s delicate clipped effort towards goal failed to test Adam Davies 15 minutes in, with Ryan Kent fizzing just over in reply, despite excellent build up play from Matty James.

Tom Bradshaw created the next opening of note midway through the half, rising to meet Gethin Jones’ centre but finding Bywater equal to his effort.

Irvine nodded over under pressure from a corner with nine minutes remaining before the break but the Reds took the lead moments later.

Mesmerising play from Kent on the left saw him dart away from the challenges and slip in Tom Bradshaw. The striker showed great presence of mind to square for Moncur, who finished smartly past Bywater.

HALF TIME: Barnsley 1-0 Burton Albion.

The Reds created two openings within seconds of each other after the restart as Bywater pulled off a stunning double save to keep Moncur and Bradshaw at bay.

After Tom Flanagan was cautioned for a poor challenge on Josh Scowen, Kent’s floated free kick in was acrobatically fired towards goal by Angus MacDonald, only for a fine save from Bywater to keep him out.

The Brewers responded by levelling through Luke Varney moments after he was introduced by Nigel Clough. The striker rose to meet a corner from the right and draw the visitors level.

Another good Kent delivery was firmly met by Adam Jackson, who failed to get the better of Bywater, the stopper just doing enough to gather his effort.

Adam Davies made a superb save when faced one-on-one with Varney shortly after, smothering his effort well after the striker took aim.

More strong play out wide from Kent saw the on-loan Liverpool man lash towards the top corner only to miss the target by a matter of inches.

Both sides struggle to create meaningful chances in the closing stages of the match but the Reds almost snatched all three points in the dying embers when Bradshaw turned smartly in the area.

He poked towards goal but Bywater did just enough to smother as the visitors held on for a point that secures their Championship status for another season.
