REPORT | Barnsley 1-1 Sheffield Wednesday

1 April 2017

Angus MacDonald earns the Reds a share of the spoils against Sheffield Wednesday in the South Yorkshire derby!

Angus MacDonald’s stoppage time header rescued a point for the Reds in this lunchtime’s South Yorkshire derby as the Reds drew 1-1 with Sheffield Wednesday.

The defender rose highest in stoppage time to meet Adam Hammill’s teasing delivery and headed into the bottom corner to salvage a much deserved point.

The Reds dominated in the first half, going close through Tom Bradshaw’s driven effort, with Alex Mowatt and Adam Hammill both going close with free kicks.

Hammill had a header well saved by Westwood at his near post, while two Callum McManaman effort sailed over Adam Davies’s crossbar and out of play.

The visitors made the breakthrough five minutes into the second half as an error in judgement from Davies allowed Adam Reach to nip in and stab the ball back for Sam Winnall to slot home.

The Reds continued to knock at the door, with Ryan Kent and Matty James going close, before MacDonald’s pinpoint header secured a draw.

It may even have been all three points had George Moncur not had a volley saved by Keiren Westwood late on, or Adam Armstrong’s effort not been cleared off the line late on.

The first effort of note came from Tom Bradshaw, who battled well to pinch the ball from Tom Lees and take aim from 20-yards, only for his effort to drift just wide.

The Reds were looking the better of the two sides, restricting Wednesday to shooting from distance, with Adam Reach and Sam Hutchinson both woefully off target with their attempts.

Adam Hammill sent a free kick just over the top at the end of a jinking run and headed Andy Yiadom’s teasing cross at Keiren Westwood’s near post, but the Irish stopper just did enough to gather the ball.

Alex Mowatt’s excellent free kick from 25 yards just before the half hour was just wide of the near post, with Bradshaw’s header from Hammill’s cross bringing another save out of Westwood.

Angus MacDonald’s cheeky header from Hammill’s corner had Westwood rooted as the ball looped towards the far corner, only for the visitors to clear off the line and keep the game scoreless.

Callum McManaman had the visitors’ best chances to take the lead heading into the break, latching onto a miscued clearance by Josh Scowen but firing his chance over the top, before blazing over from just outside the area.

HALF TIME: Barnsley 0-0 Sheffield Wednesday.

Yiadom had to be replaced early in the second half with a shoulder problem, an injury he sustained in the first half, with George Moncur coming on in his place.

Two minutes later, the visitors took the lead in the most unfortunate of circumstances. Adam Davies tried to shield the ball out of play but had his pocket picked by Adam Reach. The ball rolled loose into the centre of the area and Sam Winnall slotted into an empty net from close range.

Barry Bannan fired over the crossbar from range for the visitors before substitute Adam Armstrong almost made an immediate impact, latching onto Ryan Kent’s pass, but having his effort saved by the feet of Westwood.

Kent was next to chance his arm, firing over the top from range, while Winnall and Kent received cautions for kicking the ball away and a high tackle respectively.

For all their pressing, the Reds simply could not put the ball in the net. A dangerous low cross from Kent could not be converted by Marley Watkins, while Reach bent an effort wide from just inside the area as the game entered its final ten minutes.

Time was running out for the Reds but in stoppage time, Adam Hammill’s excellent free kick was headed home by the towering Angus MacDonald to earn the Reds a much-deserved point.

And it could have been all three points for the Reds when George Moncur’s volley from Kent’s cross looked destined for the bottom corner, only for a strong Westwood arm to save the day for the Owls.
