Stefan Payne on Northampton Cup Tie.

8 August 2016

Reds forward Stefan Payne addressed the media this morning ahead of tomorrow night’s EFL Round One Cup tie against Northampton Town.

Payne made his English Football League debut for the Reds at the weekend and he was delighted after all his work hard.

He said, “It felt great coming on, I was obviously disappointed with the result but we will kick on. It means a hell of a lot, it just shows the determination and hard-work you put in to get to that level pays off. I was in the league before but I think it’s been five years now since I’ve last been there. It just shows what I’ve done and what I’ve achieved when I’ve come on in the Championship.”

Payne said that he’s had to make a lot of sacrifices in his life to get back to the level he wants to play at, but feels it is all worth it now.

Payne explained, “A lot of people say footballers don’t do much, but since I’ve been 16 and played football at a high level I haven’t really lived. The average person can go out and do what they want but we have to stay in and be disciplined, watch what we eat and all that. When I look back, it was a hell of a lot to do.”

The Reds were defeated at the weekend but Stefan remains positive going forward and feels the cup can act as a catalyst for success in the Championship.

Payne stated, “We’ve got to look at the positives, we’ve got Northampton tomorrow and if we can get a win there and get the confidence we can go into Saturday. It’s about winning as many games as you can and getting as far as you can. It’s a confidence boost if you can win games in the cup as it sends you into the league firing.”
