Moncur: "It was a special moment getting off the mark!"

22 April 2017

After getting off the mark this afternoon, George Moncur spoke to the press following the Reds narrow defeat at Bristol City.

Despite the defeat at Ashton Gate, Moncur was again in good form, driving his team forward from midfield, breaking the lines and a constant goal-scoring threat.

The Essex lad though shared his disappointment with the result when speaking post-match.

"It was really frustrating" he said. "Great to get a goal obviously but really disappointed that we've ended up losing the game. The second half wasn't great. First half we really dominated them but the second half we couldn't maintain it.

"It's very disappointing not to come away with something in the end. Normally we like to dominate the ball but I'm not sure what went wrong after the break."

After a cracking display in the opening 45 minutes, the Reds came under intense pressure after the break and with the loss of Captain Marc Roberts the Reds makeshift defence conceded three times to their hosts.

George was struggling to understand or explain exactly why there was such a contrast in performance between both halves of the game.

He said: "We didn't see enough of the ball I don't think and it's just a shame that we've not got a result because the performance first half has been wasted really.

"Robbo going off didn't help. The bloke's different class; Club captain and he performs week in, week out for us. But we can't just blame it on losing one player. Whether we coped or not we can't blame that, no matter how massive he is for us.

"It was a shame of course, for us and him and I hope he's recovering well.

"If I had to pin it down today I'd say we probably just took our foot off the gas. The injury and the sub might have affected us but we should be doing better than how we've performed out there in the second half."

Finally getting off the mark with his first Barnsley goal left Moncur with mixed feelings after the game.

He admitted the goals were pointless in terms of the result but emphasised his desire to keep on improving and take his recent good form on into next season.

"I'm saying I scored two!" he laughed. "I think the shot was going in anyway, but either way it doesn't matter what happens. If it's two then great, if it isn't it isn't. We've not got the result.

"But yeah it was a brilliant feeling to get my first goal in the Championship. A special moment to get off the mark.

"We're really dangerous when we break quickly like that on the counter. We've got lots of willing runners breaking at pace from wide areas and midfield.

"I hope I can carry that form on next season too. I just want to keep my place in the team and keep getting better."
