Club Statement: Barnsley Football Club agrees sale of Sam Winnall to Sheffield Wednesday.

13 January 2017

Barnsley Football Club can confirm that it has sold Sam Winnall to Sheffield Wednesday.

Sam agreed personal terms with Sheffield Wednesday after the Club granted him permission to meet with club representatives earlier in the week.

Under pressure from the player, it is with great regret that the Club has agreed to sell the player during the January transfer window, which is always a difficult and problematic market-place. During the build up to the January transfer window the player, whilst performing admirably on the pitch for the Club, stated his strong desire to leave. After the Club received a formal approach from Sheffield Wednesday, and notified Sam of the interest, he made his intentions clear that he wished to join this particular club.

It is in this context, and faced with the prospect of losing the player for free in the Summer transfer window, at which point his current contract with the Club will have expired, that the Club felt it had no other option than to reluctantly accept what was a significant bid. The transfer deal agreed between the clubs allows the Club to reinvest in the squad and retain a future financial interest in the player.

Given the player made his intentions clear, and an agreement for sale was reached, with plenty of time left in the January transfer window, the Club will continue with its best efforts to replace Sam and support Paul Heckingbottom to strengthen the squad and achieve our ambition of finishing as high up the Championship table as possible.

The Club want to take this opportunity to wish Sam the very best of luck for the future.
