Fábio Jaló featured for 68 minutes as Portugal U19s secured a 2-1 victory over Greece on Wednesday evening.
The young forward was selected as part of José Lima’s 20-man squad for their UEFA European U19 Championship qualifiers, where they will also face Denmark and Serbia in Group D.
Having led through Rodrigo Ribeiro’s first half strike in Aveiro, Portugal appeared on course for three routine points before Christos Alexiou levelled late in the tie. However, Gustavo Varela – introduced with just five minutes remaining – scored the all-important winner for the hosts to ensure they got their qualification campaign off to the perfect start.
Serbia are up next for Jaló and co on Saturday evening before they face current group leaders Denmark on Tuesday.
Portugal are looking to go one step further this year, having finished as runners-up to Italy in the 2023 edition. They won this competition for the first and only time back in 2018 and have lost in the final on five occasions.
