REDS END SEASON WITH CANARIES DRAW

8 May 2021

Barnsley ended the regulation Sky Bet Championship season with a 2-2 draw against champions Norwich City at Oakwell on Saturday afternoon.

The Reds led twice through Cauley Woodrow and Conor Chaplin, but were pegged back by Emiliano Buendía and Adam Idah.

Valérien Ismaël gave Jasper Moon his full debut, with the youngster having previously featured in a cameo appearance at Rotherham United in December and for 45 minutes at Preston North End last week.

Barnsley had an early sight of goal when Chaplin took aim from the edge of the box, but his dipping half-volley whistled narrowly over the bar.

From a drop ball situation, Callum Styles swung a cross into the area that was cleared only as far as Moon who forced Tim Krul into a decent save down to his right.

The deadlock was broken midway through the half, though, when Carlton Morris won possession back and raced into the area before squaring unselfishly for Woodrow to slot into an empty net.

But the lead didn’t last long as the visitors worked it well from back to front and Max Aarons found the perfect cross for Buendía to head into the bottom corner.

The Reds continued to press forward, dominating chances and pressing Norwich high up the pitch, and Woodrow twice came close to restoring our lead first testing Krul with a low drive and then skewing wide of the upright.

We eventually made our pressure tell late in the half when Styles whipped a beautiful cross for Chaplin to nod into the far corner and put us ahead once more.

HALF-TIME: Barnsley 2-1 Norwich City

Eight minutes into the second half, however, the visitors levelled once more when Adam Idah, only on the pitch a matter of moments, swept home from close range after being picked out by Todd Cantwell.

That didn’t deter Barnsley, though, and Romal Palmer was next to try his luck with an effort from range that skidded across the saturated Oakwell turf and was gathered by Krul.

Norwich had an excellent opportunity to take the lead when Mario Vrančič whipped in a delightful free-kick, but Grant Hanley couldn’t direct his powerful header on target.

Late on, Liam Kitching was introduced for his Reds debut having got 45 minutes under his belt with our U23s earlier in the week.

Buendía came agonisingly close to firing home a winner for the Canaries following an intricate move through the middle of the pitch, but both sides had to settle for a share of the spoils.

The result means we leapfrog Bournemouth into fifth following their defeat against Stoke City, meaning we will face Swansea City in the play-offs.
