Youngster defeat Leeds

Leeds U18s 0
Barnsley U18s 3 (Abbott pen 25, Oates 40, 75)

Rhys Oates hit a fine brace as the Reds defeated top-of-the-table Leeds United 3-0 on Oakwell’s Academy Complex.

Brad Abbott set the ball rolling on 25 minutes when he despatched a fine penalty. The Barnsley slipper won the spot-kick himself after being hauled down by the Whites’ ‘keeper.

After the break with Barnsley standing firm to Leeds’ determination to get back into the match, Oates was almost in on the hour as he rounded the ‘keeper before a last-ditch tackle denied him his second.

Abbott was again involved five minutes before the interval as he helped his side double their lead. Shillito’s short free-kick was received by Abbott and he lofted the ball straight down the throat of the defence for Oates to chip the onrushing ‘keeper. It was an expertly worked free-kick direct from the training ground.

Moments after Jamie Moore glanced a header just wide, Oates made sure of all the points with his second – pouncing onto a loose ball, rounding the ‘keeper and tucking home on 75 minutes.

It was a gritty and determined performance from the Young Tykes, who have now won four on the bounce.
Reds: Chadderton, Smith, Alderson, Moore, Freeman, Abbott, Shillito, Alexander-Salmon, Biggins, Oates, Maris.
