THE Reds made a bright start at Fratton Park with Danny Haynes going close after two minutes following a good through ball by Doyle and a mistake at the back resulting in a chance, but Haynes' shot was cleared for a corner. Pompey came into the game after seven minutes when a good ball by David Nugent found Dave Kitson who forced Steele into a fantastic fingertip save. On 29 minutes the Reds came the closest team to taking the lead with a Danny Haynes half volley that narrowly went wide. With eight minutes remaining in the first half Barnsley went close again when Jacob Mellis was found in the box, but his shot was blocked by Rocha for a Barnsley corner. On 39 mins Pompey made a substitution as Lawrence, who appeared to be injured, went off for Mokoena. A Cotterill shot from the edge of the box forced Steele to dive low and he held onto the ball well. Kieran Trippier's put in a very dangerous cross going across the face of the area. It was an evenly matched first half. Jim O'Brien was an early substitution with Garry O'Connor coming on in his place. Luke Steele was called upon again with another good save after Kitson got in behind the Reds defence . Jacob Butterfield replaced Frank Nouble on 68 minutes and made an immediate impact with a storming run down the left wing causing Portsmouth all sorts of problems. Portsmouth showed their strength on the bench bringing on former Arsenal man Kanu in place of Ward. Barnsley tried to unlock the Portsmouth defence with Trippier and Haynes both putting dangerous crosses into the area, but they could not get that final touch. A Jason Shackell header in the box caused Pompey some concern, but again the danger was cleared. With the game looking like finishing goaless and Butterfield foul led to a Pompey freekick which was taken by Halford and up popped Kanu with a glancing header to score with just six minutes of the 90 remaining.
