Winnall Grateful For 'Second Chance' at Scunthorpe But Aims For Reds Hat-Trick

27 November 2014

Reds striker Sam Winnall says he will always be grateful for his 'second chance' presented to him by Saturday's opponents, Scunthorpe United.

The 23-year-old hit 23 goals for the Iron last term as they enjoyed promotion from League Two before joining the Reds this summer.

Speaking to Barnsley's official matchday magazine, Be Red, Winnall said, “It was quite late on last year and I was on trial at Crewe at the time. Brian Laws was the Scunthorpe gaffer and he got in touch with my agent to ask to take me on trial. I went there for three games and they offered me a deal at the end of it so I’ll always be thankful for that. They gave me a second chance in football and a chance to show what I could do on a regular basis."

Winnall has nine goals to his name so far this season, including a hat-trick against his former loan club Burton Albion in the FA Cup, and the striker is hopeful of a repeat performance against his former employers.

“I wouldn’t mind another hat-trick, hopefully that will happen," added Winnall. "But I’m really looking forward to the game which I want to win and score a few goals in."
