Ben Mansford on Joe Dudgeon and Potential Transfers

1 September 2014

Barnsley Football Club Chief Executive Ben Mansford gave his thoughts on today's transfer deadline day.

Speaking on the Reds' official Audioboo channel, Mansford commented upon the extension of Hull City defender Joe Dudgeon's loan at Oakwell.

"We’ve worked really hard with him and with the medical staff - and in consultation with Hull - to make sure that we manage him because he has had his injury problems with his knee," said Mansford.

“Joe’s a fantastic character. He was keen to stay. He had one or two Championship clubs and, at times, he was linked to other transfer activity with Hull but through his agent and himself, he communicated a desire to stay at Barnsley. What Danny and I have said since the end of last season is that we only wanted players who truly wanted to be at Barnsley."

The Reds' Chief Exec revealed the Club came very close on 'one or two' other targets but there's no rush to recruit with the emergency loan window opening in the near future.

“In terms of other transfer deadline day business, we’ve tried to do one or two things," he continued. "Danny’s well documented that there were times in the game on Saturday, especially in the second half, when we could have done better to retain possession in the top third of the pitch. We made a number of enquiries today and we came very close on agreeing one or two things with bigger Premier League and Championship Clubs. However, I think those players have got Premier League or Championship aspirations and at this stage, they were looking for permanent deals.

“I think we’ve got to look to the loan window when it reopens.

“My frustration is that the finance made available by the Club and the fantastic support of our Owner, again means that we will attract one of those types of players. Speaking to their players and agents today they’ve sort of held on.”
