U18s | REPORT: Birmingham City 4-2 Barnsley

21 January 2017

Three stoppage time goals from the hosts stun Chris Howarth and Martin Devaney's Reds.

Birmingham City Under 18s fought back from 2-1 down in the dying seconds to beat Barnsley Under 18s 4-2 at Wast Hills.

Goals from Tom Clare and Wilberforce Ocran had cancelled out Geraldo Bajrami's header, giving the Reds a slim lead heading into the closing stages.

But three goals in the final five minutes from the hosts, including a brace for substitute Jack Concannon, saw them turn the game on its head and ensure the Reds left empty handed.

The Reds began the better of the two sides, fashioning the first shot on goal when Wilberforce Ocran burst away and drew a save out of Adam Siviter at his near post.

The hosts hit back as Odin Bailey's delicate effort rebounded into play off the crossbar and it was this scare that sparked the Reds into life.

Barnsley drew first blood on the quarter hour mark when Cameron Simpson's hard work earned him a crossing opportunity and Tom Clare rewarded the winger, calmly sliding home the cross.

Ocran hit the side netting as the Reds went in search of a second goal before heading another good cross from Simpson just wide of the target.

Charlie Lakin was denied by a fine save from Jake Greatorex while Geraldo Bajrami rose well to meet a corner, but failed to direct his header on target.

Cameron Ebbutt dragged the final chance of the half wide after escaping the marking down the left, but failing to direct an effort on goal.

HALF TIME: Birmingham City 0-1 Barnsley

Olly Mulders watched an effort drift just wide of the post moments into the second half and Greatorex made another flying save to keep out another driven effort from the midfielder.

From the resulting corner however, the Blues drew level as Bajrami climbed highest and directed his header into the top corner of Greatorex's goal.

Birmingham's Tai-Reece Chisholm raced away from four markers but was denied at the crucial moment as he shaped to shoot but 20 minutes from time, the Reds regained the lead.

Substitute Mo Saeed showed excellent balance on the left to round Louis Yuill and slotted across the six-yard box, allowing Ocran to fire home his first goal for the Reds.

Long-distance efforts from Kane Swinburn and Will Smith whistled just over the top, and Swinburn had a chance to put the result beyond all doubt three minutes from time.

He powered past three defenders before lashing the ball across the face of goal and that miss proved costly as the Blues levelled in stoppage time as substitute Jack Concannon slotted home Bajrami's pass.

Adam Lund almost got the Reds an even later winner as he glanced Swinburn's corner just wide of the post, but there was a further sting in the tale for Chris Howarth and Martin Devaney's Reds.

Concannon volleyed home a set-piece in the third minute of injury time and moments after, fellow substitute Jordan Clarke powered an effort under Greatorex.

Reds: Greatorex (GK), Smith (Alderton, 72' ), Lund (c), Peters, Bertie, Swinburn, Tingle, Palmer, Simpson (Saeed, 64' ), Ocran, Clare (Miller, 67' ).

Subs: Murphy (GK), McGowan.
